Hi All,

I've just got my line activated and I'm trying to test that my ADSL connection works. I've tried using the following account:

username: guest1@telkomadsl
password: guest1

It dials up and says that it is verifying username and password and then just says "the remote computer did not respond, blah blah blah"

Just wanna know, is this account info right? I phoned Telkom ADSL support and told her about this and she just said that you can't go on the net without an isp? Does this account work without an ISP?

It's prolly the USB modem that I'm using now, getting a wrt54g on Thursday.

Anyway thanks in advance!

Na, I can't even connect :( . That's why I was wondering about those test account details. The funny thing is, it seems to be trying to connect but then it just says that the remote computer rejected it.

I'm using my good 'ole 56k now :D

if its the telkom modem, have a look in the system tray and see if the circular DSL icon turns green. double click on it and you should get your line speed. if you do then its correctly installed. also you can only connect once this turns green.

any other modem check under networks in control panel. under LAN or High Speed Internet, look to see if the local aea connection acquired a network address. if it did then it's working

I have lent a Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem from a pal of mine who had a spare modem.

It says that it's disconnected in Network Connections and it keeps giving me an error when I try to connect to the guest account, "Remote PC rejected call, ect". It seems to have acquired an IP if I type ipconfig in command prompt but I'm not sure if it's right.

Can anyone verify for me if this test account is working atm?

take out the '1' 's. have you checked the installation of the usb modem. guest restricts to telkom sites.

Maybe check that because as far as i know the WRT54G is a standard wireless router....not an adsl router or modem.

why dont just pay them to do it

makes the most sense
everything will work then

does the green light that flashes ever stay green on the modem indicating a link? if not phone the support and get a techie out there

@Silent_Bob

Don't really wanna do that cos it's his older bro's account for work.

@krycor

Tried it without the ones, to no avail :(

@Bobb

Doh! I can't believe I could have missed that. They advertise it as a cable/DSL router. Oh well, do ya guys think it's really worth getting that for the firewall and all and then getting a seperate modem or should I scrap it? I am getting it for R600.

@Killadoob

Wanted to learn to do it myself. I don't mind if it takes a while + I can stop money from going to Telkom :D . Both lights are green solidly now, no flickering. It does seem to have made some kind of a connection, are there any settings I might need for ADSL other than my username and password?

you set your connection via pppoe right?

do you have another account other than the guest1 to try?

when you run the setup vcc and llc i think it should 8 and 35

Via PPPoE? Don't know. I set up the drivers and that's it. I tried to install Carrick's RASPPPoE but it wouldn't work. I have an old version of this software though. This modem is advertised as a PPPoA modem though, it's from Britain, what BT give their customers.

I'm in the process of getting an account from OpenISP.

Was not given options of vcc and llc during install, will search through settings for that now.

Mwahaha, my ADSL works now. Got a USRobotics Maxg 9108 Router with built in ADSL modem and set it up in flash! Thanks for the help tho guys, I actually needed that VCC LLC stuff :D

EDIT: And for anyone who does self install here's the settings I used on my router

Protocol: PPPoE (or PPPoverEthernet the option must say something like that)
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Modulation: Auto-Sense (Is there maybe a specific setting for this, not just auto?)
Encapsulation: LLC (mine has option LLC/SNAP, but I think you only need LLC)
Authentication: CHAP

and obviously your username and password. Not sure if anyone can clarify these settings? I don't really know what the stuff any of it means.

This is a really nice router. A breeze to set up, nice user interface and it has good future compatibility like support for ADSL2+, 125mbps wifi, greater range than normal 802.11g, etc.

Big up to Mr. Beep for hooking me up with an ADSL account so quickly and painlessly :D
