Photographers – it would seem – are a unique bunch of people: talented, dedicated, hard-working and unimaginably naive. It goes something like this: “if I give away my product or service for nothing, it will act as a loss leader, helping people become aware of me in order for me to start getting paid work.”

I agree. People tend to put value on something based on what they paid for it. If you give it to them for nothing, they don't value it as much and won't likely be thrilled with the product. Funny thing that.

yeah I found this when I was doing graphic design. I would say that 2/3rds of the work I did free of charge for friends and acquaintances was never used. Not because the work was bad, but because they would often come to me before they thought it through properly, and seeing as how they never paid, there was no incentive to get it printed. I stopped doing free work eventually.
