You watch a 1080p movie and there is letterboxing at the top and bottom!

It drives me Nucking Futs! I mean seriously, whats the point if half your screen is black.

If it wasn't for the black bars you'd lose the panoramic visual aspect of the film.
Letterboxing means you watch the movie in true 1:235 cinemascope.
And the there's Avatar.

I have no idea what u just said, when I watch a movie, I want it to take up the whole 43" of my tv without losing quality. Avatar is one of the only movie I have that fills up the entire screen and that's what I love.

It's irritating.

He's saying that your screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9 whereas movies are filmed in different aspect ratios therefore part of your screen is blacked out.

Exactly! tbh, I find that its a rip off. You buy a 43" or even a 50/60" tv because thats the size you want to watch your HD movies, and then when you watch, half the size is gone and you just get black. The filming industry needs to take into consideration the 16:9 aspect ratio and release a version that is 16:9.

There is nothing more irritating than 1:235 cinemascope!!! The bars are irritating!

When we had 4:3 they started filming in 16:9 and we had bars. Now that everyone has 16:9 they do 1:235! And the worst is that they often film in 16:9 and then edit it to 1:235!

Directors have been filming in multiple aspect ratios for donkey's years....

They chose the aspect ratio that will suit the visual style they're trying to achieve with the movie.

Its a tad irritating, but not overly so for me.

The only visual effect they achieve by using a ratio other than 16:9 is irritating the viewer!

The Dark Knight is a perfect example - for most of the movie there were black lines, but the IMAX scenes were 16:9. The 16:9 scenes were far better, and I couldn't wait for the next 16:9 scene.

I stretch 4:3 to 16:9 but leave any other aspect ratios alone.
Works for me. Whatever works for you is fine (for you) as well

Movies are shot for .... you guessed it, movie theaters. The screen aspect ratio norm for (new) movie theaters is 2.39:1 these days, so by simple geometry its not going to fit perfectly on a 16:9 TV (= 1.78:1 aspect ratio).

When transfering to DVD/Bluray most directors/studios still feel home viewer should see the whole frame (incl left/right extermities) to appreciate the movie's original experience, therefore the top/bottom black bars.
