Dota 2 game download...

Hi

I noticed dota 2 is free to play so I downloaded the Steam Application and started downloading the game from mobile data, however it is 9gigs, will I be able to download the game or even get the downloaded files from a friend and just paste them into the steam folder or do I have to download the game through the Steam application?

You can copy paste, but I recommend you use Steams Backup and Restore Function.


He backs it up from his PC onto some sort of storage, then you Restore it.

I recommend you choose the 4.7 DVD (instead of it splitting up into many files).

Then you simply back up from the storage device.

None should change to "Dota 2"

Just to add the copy and paste method does not always work. Did not work with dota 2 with me. so rather use the restore and backup game method

The only time copy and paste didn't work for me was when I did it from 64 bit to 32. The other times it did it quite well. Just validates and then you are good to go.

Too much work. I keep a folder on a separate drive for games that I wanna play but not this second. Easier to just copy paste the folder in and out than to go through that whole process.

While that will work on your PC all of the time, copying between two PCs does not always work. I have also had more success with the backup and restore function than a direct copy, where often times even if the game is up to date it will still want to download some files, sometimes small sometimes big. With the backup and restore I haven't had this issue.

So I found a guy in IT that had the game and I'm restoring his backup right now, thanks a lot! Time to play

Copy and pasting ALWAYS works but most people don't understand what's going on.

You paste the folder/game, THEN go to your library and click install, any other way and you could mess it up.

It might say it's at 0% for about 10 minutes in the menu (it seems common with very large games), but give it time and it will suddenly be 100%. People often mistake this phase for Steam re-downloading the entire game. Have patience.

HerZeLeiD, I can promise you that's not always the case. Again, it might work fine for a lot of people but that doesn't mean it works all the time. Many times I have tried copying a game and "installing" it through Steam and it still wants to download data even after it finds all the game files (checked with network monitor)

Sometimes there is a new update then it will only download the delta.

No, even if the game is up to date, as in I launched it before I started copying, sometimes it will still want to download files.

Normally when my mates and I share a steam game like this, to save the download, we copy 2 things, we copy the app_manifest file, each game has it's own and the actual game as well, and we have not encountered any problems so far. But it will always be a safer option to use the backup and restore function.
