Whenever I play DotA I find myself feeling guilty..
1) Makes me selfish with my time.
2) Cannot pause game so everything else becomes paused.
3) A lot of time passes while playing.
4) Back hurts from sitting stiff for an hour..
5) Less family/friend time.

I don't know. Let me hear you views on this.
:(

1) Get whoever you are neglecting to also play
2) See point 1
3) Play at night and sleep less
4) Get a better chair
5) see point 1

This is the only solution, quitting DotA in is not an option.

i know its ridiculously addictive..
i know quiting isn't an option...
ha ha.. ya i guess I will just start only playing at night

Hi my name is ... and I quit DotA...

No really, me and the girlfriend would play it a LOT (LANS, with friends online, with randoms, etc)... Really bad time waster. I always felt if you lost you would have to play again to end on a win, and if you won you wanted to keep on going. 5 hours would pass and it would be time to go to bed etc.

Dota is at it's best when you got a good team else it's one of the worst games to play. And yes it eats time but then again what addictive game doesn't?

I took a year to quit my dota addiction...seriously life is better without dota. I wasted so many hours on that BS

DOTA is/was fun, but any game that requires significant time-slices to play has that effect :p

Many FPS's have around 15 minute round times. Putting something off for 15 minutes, or losing 15 minutes of "building" isn't as much of a loss as losing an hour (or sometimes more!).

Rather start playing a game where you can put it down at shorter notice.

Just focus on the negative aspects of the game, like the constant pulling of players, team stacking, getting owned and having to sit through 60 minutes of hell... and you'll find the game becoming less and less appealing. Negative thinking in this way is usually not a good thing, but to kill an addiction - absolutely .:p

To be honest if you are capable of feeling guilty for putting off your other committments, friends/family members, then, considering that most other DotA addicts just don't give a @#$%, it's a sign you are capable of spending your time much more wisely.

well i did actually quit dota for 2 months.. easiest solution for me was to just delete it, and believe me, the cravings were bad...:( but since there was no possible way of getting hold of the game at the time i wanted to play, i did something else.. they say it takes 21 days to break a habit.. So i waited for 3 weeks and after that i stopped thinking about playing..

what I have found is that when i am bored, the first thing that pops into my mind to replace the boredom is DOTA...:p

this might sound stupid but it is really true.. it is a fun game but seriously messes with your personal affairs ( studying, time with friends + family etc etc)..

The reason i started playing again is because a friend made me play a game with him and boooommmm.... addicted.. so I just deleted dota off my pc and hopefully I won't need to play ever ever again...

I dont see the point of the game. Played it once thought it was brilliant, but then suddenly I realized... it's crap.

Very good analysis ;)

DotA imo is just hard to stop because it is such an accomplishment to become a good player. I don't know the statistics but I do think there are over 100 heroes of which each have 4 spells.. Now I know every heroes 4 spells names and what they do, I think there are over 100 items too.. I know all the items names+ what they do.. Once you start winning it is incredibly hard to stop..

I had the same with WoW. Luckily the game itself changed and made the choice for me, so when my game time ran out, I didn't renew it. Since then I've had more braais and beers with friends and family than what I had for probably a year whilst playing WoW.

If I get bored now, I just start a game of Company of Heroes, play the one game and move on to something else. If something IRL comes up, I either quite the game or pause it and go do that. Once I'm done and remember that I was playing, I'll go on, or I'll just ALT+F4 before switching off the pc.

I was actually contemplating on giving DOTA a go....but after reading this thread, I might just give it a pass.

The moral of the story is that games can be addictive yes......I actually don't have anything to add to that. Maybe companies should stop making good games, or maybe we should stop being so damn good and PWNING other people which makes us feel even better.

Misdirection

Only a few aspects of the game that are unlocked when you make the jump from public games to competitive clannies.

Going back to public games is impossible after that.

DotA... or at least competitive DotA, is brilliant. However, the tedious souls you encounter in the "pubbie" sphere is enough to make you want to never have children... in case they turn out like some of the kids in the DotA circles.

I blame rap music.
