dotCapeTown easily beats dotJoburg

I could have predicted this. Cape Town has a much bigger techy startup vibe than Joburg.

Just a quick warning to anyone wanting to register these domains with www.domains.co.za

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-of-domain-name-after-I-have-already-paid-for

Don't think you will pay almost R295 for your domain name. If they think a domain is a 'Premium' domain, they can charge you up to R2500 for the registration.

Just a word of caution of this scam! Don't know if it is only domains.co.za or if it is 'industry-wide'.

Its industry wide. Certain domains are considered premium domains and you have to pay more for them. Especially if its a very short word or only 3 letters.

I don't see domains.co.za on the registrar list: https://www.registry.net.za/accredited_registrars_tld.php?tld=zadotcities

Edit: I see http://www.diamatrix.co.za/domains send you to domains.co.za

Search for Diamatrix.

Domains.co.za is theirs and they are a pretty reputable company.

Reputable - not in my books. This is a scam whether it comes from them or the registrar.

What is noteworthy is that 237 dotCapeTown domain name applications have been submitted by just one person, skewing the cTLD stakes...

They are the registrar, this comes from the registry. Which is ZACR. All registrars (like godaddy or namecheap) will have to comply with the registrys demands. No one is exempt from this if they want to sell .joburg or .capetown domains.

Then it is an industry-wide scam. Thanks for confirming it.

Besides, to make it clear, I can confirm this far that Namecheap does not carry the registration of these domains, probably because of this malpractice.

Sigh. now would be a good time for you to consider a new career.

Like I stated in another post....

If this was above board, they would not advertise the registration of these domains at R295.

They allow users to register and force them to pay. Once they receive the money they send a notification you registered a 'premium' domain. Now you will only get it if you pay another R1000+.

This is a scam - from both the registrar and any company supporting it.

They should fix their systems and stop the scamming.

In the same way Im being scanned when a house costs more because its in an expensive street.

The only issue domains.co.za have here is the same issue I have with my domain registration company (and its also the reason why I am not selling these domains yet). Its very hard to automatically differentiate between what ZACR have listed as a premium domain and what is a normal domain. So while the whois query can tell you the domain is unregistered, it cant tell you if the domain is a premium one or not. So sometimes domains.co.za will only find out when they get billed for it. Its a cluster **** and if you want to focus your energy anywhere, focus at the people who deserve it. ZACR.

Nowhere in the world can a registrar decide which available domains are premium and which are not and charge clients what they want for various domains. This is prohibited by ICANN. The only time a registrar can do this is when they purchase an expired domain and list it for sale.

This is still a scam no matter how you spin it - and it is only happening here in SA.

Are you trolling for the fun of trolling or whats going on here?

Ive not said the registrar decides, Ive told you multiple times the registry decides. Please learn the difference between a registrar and a registry.

Please read this document to get a better understanding. https://www.registry.net.za/content.php?gen=1&contentid=163&title=Org.Za+Premium+Names

Dude, why are you so vigorously defending this scam? Are you in the industry as well?

Just confirmed with Uniregistry that they do not follow this practice by charging more for premium domains. If the domain is available you pay the registration fee, whether it is premium or not. Please point me to the BS you are saying...

Its not a scam. You are acting like an A+ techie by completely not understanding whats going on here. You just want to blame when you dont even know what you are going on about.
