I'm very much in two minds about this proliferation of the TLD namespace tbh...

Depending on how much they charge for a sub-domain, I might very well purchase one and re-direct it to my own website. If its competitive with older TLD's then I will definitely do it, but if the .travel TLD pricing is anything to go by (mix that in with the idiot local government in Durban) I don't expect it to be anything under R1000 to register one.

I think it sucks. It's kinda like suddenly making it a free-form which will make it harder to know if it's a real url. kinda like when when going to banking domains.. if suddenly there was a fnb.bank.. i'd bolt lol

I doubt this will come to fruition. The costs to apply for a TLD are pretty high and the requirements for registrars are way higher than what the city of Durban will be able to muster. In other words, they'd never make their money back by selling .durban domains to would be website owners simply because there won't be enough people willing to pay the costs. And why should they if their ccTLD already works for them?

.africa will happen, but beyond that I don't think so.
