dotJoburg, dotCapeTown, dotDurban pricing

URL's are so 90's, who cares what your domain name are these days. If you are looking for someone you use a search engine, only a few people still play guess, guess games on a URL names.
 
I suspect that in a few months or years when this becomes fashionable, those who slacked will kick themselves for not heading the call. It may not make sense now, but the wait-and-see will clarify the picture...imho. For now, I observe with interest where persuasive marketing takes us.

This. Some of the premium names that are still available are just stupidly cheap for what those domains have gone for in other TLDs. When dotAsia launched in 2008 some of the domains went for stupid money. Sex.asia went for USD83000, sexy.asia for USD29000, homes.asia was USD40000. I don't know the amounts for some of the new TLD's in this current round but I know all of the big zones like dotLondon and dotBerlin have had several domains well into four figures in USD. The domains here are now out of the auction phase so its first come, first served.

I'm work for major supplier to ZACR so we aren't allowed to grab anything yet, but there is a nice list of domains I'm going to grab once we are. Might need to start muttering about strike action to the boss.
 
Be careful though ... I registered a few domains today in the .joburg / .capetown gtld space (invoiced, paid & registered) and have just been informed via email by the registrar that some of these are "premium" and now I have to pay extra or the domains will be deleted. Any thoughts?

Yes. They are scamming people. Stay away from these domains and companies selling them.

Besides, these extensions will never have any value. Just like co.za domains. They have no value at all.

Wait, so they are allowed to charge more than quoted after an agreed price? I smell BS. Premium my shoe. Domains are first come first serve

My opinion is that they know these extensions will fail. They are pulling a quick one in the hope of generating millions and disappear. Many people and companies will soon be left stranded without domain names.
 
Well I thought the company (DOMAINS.CO.ZA/DIAMATRIX) was reputable as they were quoted in a few articles on MyBB but they're insisting on me paying a whopping R1225 EXTRA per domain as they have been "informed by ZACR" that they are premium domains. BEWARE!

@ChocolateBadger, the registry decides upfront what is premium and not, Registrars pull the data from the Registry. Basically any 1,2,3 letter or number / combination plus any other domain name that they deemed as a great domain they can make as a premium domain. This in no different to any Registry in the world, they all do this.

The domains that have not been registered in Landrush or Sunrise are all basically 1st come 1st serve in the general availability phase which is what started today.

There were about 7 clients who registered multiple premium domains 1st thing this morning that went through as regular domains, our accounts department contacted some of these clients but I have tried to reach out to personally to some this evening and the rest in the morning to discuss.

To be honest there were a few teething issues this morning that nobody could foresee as SA has never had a rush for domains like there was this morning, it was a first. Additionally domains that are "contested" in the Sunrise phase also reflect as available on the WHOIS system causing some confusion.

@quovadis, please can you PM me your details so I can investigate and revert to you in the morning.

Hi Wayne - There is NO way for any user to determine if a domain is a premium domain when doing a registration - your system quotes the price if the domain is available and it can be added to a cart. You checkout the cart, make payment and receive all the confirmations. In my case I got an email 6 hrs later saying that I should pay R1225 x 5 domains or they will be deleted.

We do not determine if a domain is a Premium domain or not, nor do we have a list of premium domains, ZACR Registry determines if a domain is a premium domain.

The reason why no ISP's are selling premium domains is that most billing systems can only sell a domain for 1 price and not have a regular price and a premium price and be able to adjust this on the fly based on what message we get back from the Registry.
After running into this issue early this morning with some premium registrations and your was one of the issues, then consulting with ZACR about it, we put in additional measures to now block any premium domain registration unless we perform it manually on our side. This was the only way to solve that issue. I can only assume that the reason for the delay was that our dev team were collaborating with the Registry in finding a solution and then to get a breakdown of premium domains that we could crosscheck against our records.

So are you saying that ZACR is at fault or domainscoza/diamatrix is at fault? I still cannot see how this is the fault of your customers and that a contract is formed on acceptance of the order, receipt of payment and confirmation is provided/product is fulfilled.

Thanks to Uniform aka ZACR and their greedy pricing schemes, I cant sell these domains yet due to the complexity of their pricing :(

Actually - that's a bad (non) explanation.

The price charge extension is clearly outlined at https://www.registry.net.za/content2.php?wiki=1&contentid=155&title=Price+Charge+Extension - the one used for .joburg/.capetown/.durban is the most widely implemented out there.

The only way a registrar could (since the start of .joburg/.capetown/.durban) register a premium name is by actually confirming the price to the registrar as per that spec.

Premium names are an industry wide phenomenon in the new gtld space - mainly to try and recover things like the ICANN US$185000 (yip thats over two million rands just in a non-refundable) application fee, amongst other expenses.....
 
I guess this is 1 way to piss away money. Would rather pay a company to push my site higher up in googles result set.
