Double Standards in our Local Media?

Its been over a week since the Carte Blanche episode aired with regards to online gambling. (know there was a thread here about it)

It was pointed out that it is illegal to play online gambling/gaming and you may not get paid out if you do win a big jackpot.

Normally when an episode like this is aired, the Newspapers, online media
(ie. News24), etc... all leap on the bandwagon and give follow-ups.

Since this Carte Blanche episode; I have seen nothing on News24, and nothing in the Newspapers about online gambling being illegal; or warning consumers about this.
I can only assume this is because a large portion of their advertising income is based on the online gaming industry.

My conclusion (for the exception of Carte Blanche), that there is a double standard in the media where the consumer does not come first; but their profits.

Interesting question..

There have been follow up articles that I've seen in a few places, but not really headline news per se on any of the websites.
 
If I did not win the big jackpot, I do not care about it at all, and I certainly don't care about someone else winning the jackpot, and if that person gets ripped off by the government or the casino, then that is that persons problem. And everyone else feels exactly the same, and that is why there is no follow ups on this story.

Follow ups only occur is the public is interested in the topic, that is why our religion and politic debates are so popular, while our enviro and tourist debates are hardly talked about.
 
I dont see anything wrong with gambling; and every man to themselves.

However I am sure this is far more to this Online Gaming industry. The fact that these gaming adverts are everywhere and no one complains tells me that there are some officials getting kick-backs to keep quiet.

I assure you if I advertised a pyramid scheme or my own lottery draw in the newspaper; I would be in court in no time.

So who are the government officials and public servants getting kick-backs from the online gaming industry to allow this?

Again I wish the local media actually did their job and investigate.
 
I noticed that the silversands TV adverts now say that you are not playing with actual money, and that it is only for people to learn to play. Anyone know if this is true?

They very cleverly advertise for the silversands poker school and not the learning site but if you go to silversandspoker.com thats where you gamble in RANDS even though its illegal.
 
The advert never mentions silversands.com iirc..

It ALWAYS talks about Silversands.tv.

The same goes for African Palace as well...

Are they different sites/companies? I just assumed that all Silversands adverts were for the same thing.
 
I dunno tbh...

I just assumed they were different.. the Silversands looked profitable so someone else started African Palace...

Isn't M-net part of multi-choice?

And don't you see tons of inline casino adds on dstv?

So the carte blanche teams salaries technically get paid from some of the cash online casino's pay.

I've heard though, that DSTV/Multichoice/Media24 may be stopping that kind of advertising soon... co-incidental timing :)
 
Yeah but they didn't bother interviewing their employers regarding those adds.

It means their salaries (The Money) was more important to them than interviewing their employers.

So I think 1 single standard, both media groups report what they want to report.
