I have just been downgraded to 2mb.
My upstream is now 512k though (woohoo)

Anyone got the same problem? Anyone know why this has happened?

*stresses* i would rather have 4mbit down than 512up :/ *checks*

A friend of mine had this happen to him earlier this week.

where abouts are you? Were you getting 4mbit speeds? Was your SNR/line attenuation bad?

We both from PE

Was getting over 400k/s using a download manager

Currently my attenuation is
DS Line Attenuation 38
US Line Attenuation 41

Not sure what it was before.

Sorry dont know much about that sort of stuff

Sure glad they left mine alone!

If them Bioches mess mith my 4mbt, there will be hell to pay. Im gonna go "Punisher" on someones ass. :)

Style

Been having intermittent sync problems on our office line since upgrading (before 1 Sept) to 1Mbps/4Mbps.
Yesterday after I reported this fault AGAIN a techie called me and said that he was going to change the line “profile” to 2Mbps to see if that “fixed” the problem.
I asked if he could rather change it to 3Mbps but he said that the system only allowed 2 or 4 Mbps :(
This line is connected to the Barrack Street exchange in Cape Town.
Sync light still flashing this morning, oh well let me go call them again.

I had a similiar issue and they claimed it was the service they offer and it was up to 4MB. However the techies came out, made one or two adjustments and after that I have had a continues 4MB sync. I know some exchanges cause problems when they upgrade more then one line and some technicians don't know how to correct this.

This is my 512 line:

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin

: 44.5 23.0 db

Line Attenuation

: 20.5 11.0 db

Data Rate

: 512 256 kbps

It used to be 640 or something and 384, What gives?

My line is now syncing at 2048 down and 512 up but i can not connect to ISP, Telkom sending techie out.

Hi,

how good is the '4mbps' service in Cape Town?
I still subscribe to the paltry 512kbps handling frustration as well as I can, trying to remember what we are coming from rather than looking at technology in developed countries.

For comparison purposes, as i live part of the year in France, the latest offer (on trial , full rolll-out next year) is:

- 50mbps symmetrical DSL, unshaped, uncapped (yes 50mbps next year... no typing error, and already over 20mbps available.
- over 100 TV free channel over IP including HDTV
- free land telephony over 28 countries (Europe, USA, Australia, China etc)

still for 29€/mo all inclusive, and without any need to rent a line from the local telco (FranceTelecom). OK, this is FTTH technology, (Fiber To The Home), and I'm not sure i'll ever see it down here.

Secondly, bulk price for 1GB is about a few US$ cents worldwide, so what is the actual rationale for capping accounts???

I understand 4mbps is still the best adrenalin rush in the neighbourhood for some, but where are we really going in the short to mid term? Are we bound to be suckers for the rest of our lives here, or am i missing something???

Thanks

bv

I can see the news headlines "Telkoms 4Meg trial comes to an end..." pay up R1000 more and you can keep the 4meg, otherwise back to 1 meg

you will see me jumping off a bridge then, cause no way can i afford that but then once you have gone 4mbit there is no going back :(

Thats exactly what telkom wants... Their marketing stregegy is brilliant.... like a drug dealer - "the first hit is free... after that you pay"

I know they are not that reliable, but I was told by the operator ( without asking about it) while applying for ADSL, that certain areas are being trialed for 4MB and if successful all 1024k users will be upgraded for free and monthly cost will remain the same

bv, what part of France are you in? I saw a thing on Discovery Channel about them laying fiber along all the underground sewerage pipes.
What makes it easier to do the fiber in Paris, is because everything is so close together, whereas South Africa is a lot bigger :(

Cheers, Nick

And it's starting already!

We've had 1Meg lines 'upgraded' to 4Meg without being consulted, and suddenly most IS routers won't synch reliably.

Up until now, Telkom has 'downgraded' these lines to 1Meg or 512, but today, we hear there is now a charge of R400 to do this!!!

So it goes a little something like this:

*telkom sneaks in upgrade without telling anyone
*upgrade causes more problems than it solves
*telkom CHARGES to return to the way it was, before they changed it without your permission...

Talk about extortion!!!!

Exactlly what I was told today when I asked to have our business ADSL line downgraded to 1mb from 4mb (due to poor quality since upgrade) after being on hold backwards and forwards between different idiots for 1h45min I was told we would have to pay, I let rip with the usual fuming and told them they would be hearing from our lawyers!
