Downgraded from 4mb to 2mb

I might upgrade soon to 1mbit IS uncapped, can i tell telkom not to make the line 4mbit from the start?

they should do that anyways if your exhange can handle it

I think he's saying he doesn't want 4meg Hansa ;) I don't know if telkom won't do it, I'd love to have a 4 meg line :p 512 is slow and now it's even slower, thanks telscum!

o my bad :D sorry..........buy y not? my 4mb is working perfectly. even on the 1mb uncapped you should get higher speeds than 1mb, cos i had a 512 uncapped account and with the 4mb line i was getting +300kbps on the news servers

you can easily get put back on 4mbit ( or as close to it as you can, it is after all “up to 4mbit )
usually if there was a problem with your line and they said that it is the speed. and put you on the 2mbit and didn’t fix the problem then it wasn’t the speed. they usually then find the real problem and fix it without putting the speed back to 4mbit. even tho it is just a click of a button

Since they made my office line 2Mbps on Friday I have not been able to connect to my ISP. The ISP (WA) does not even get an attempted log in.
The line status is showtime and synced at 2048kbps down and 512kbps up.
I have tried 2 different routers but no luck, this morning I will try a 3rd.
I think that they forgot to click one of those buttons  in the meantime I wait for the techie that never comes

Techie just came and fixed the line, just reset the exchange port can you believe it, like they could have tried that days ago
Anyway back to 4Mbps for now.
They originally said they would change to 2Mbps because of line quality.

Both my lines at work have been downgraded from 4mb to 2mb, just happened like an hour ago.

So that's it then, Telkom are cutting all 4mb lines down to 2?

It definitely wasn't line quality in my case, my offices are 700m from the DSLAM and attenuation/noise margin was perfect.

*Mere seconds after posting the above the lines are back up to 4mb. WTF is going on?

**Even more mere seconds after that I noticed only one line is, the other is still 2mb.

Do you use the cisco router? As posted above they do not sync at 4mbit and this is the reason i dont want to touch it with a 10m pole, clients are paying for 1mbit would rather not risk problems on 4mbit. As far as i know even if the line is 4mbit the IS tunnel will be rate limited to 1mbit

2mb is about the going rate of the 4mb ADSL option Be glad it syncs at 2mb becuase the 4mb is very unstable, reason for this is the router must do handshaking everytime line conditions drop it starts up 4mb and drops down too 800Kbps in some cases. I infact want my DSLAM to be set on 2mb becuase I cant enjoy a decent game of Warcraft3 without disconnecting, and what are the chances of getting 4mb speeds in South Africa. Its pefetic to use something like DAP(Download Accelerator) to get optimal speeds.

I find quite a few 1thread downloads now get 3mbit+ speeds. Actually been doing international speed tests the last few days and most have reached over 2mbit quite easily...

Reading this thread I am happy to say that I am one of the few that have a perfectly syncing 4MB line that has not dropped once since Telkom sorted out an issue with the exchange. I have been running for a month now and have had no syncing issues or downgrading issues.

I have downloaded all the latest MS software from the MSDN servers in the last 3 days and right now have Vista being pulled down and still browsing, streaming, reading e-mail and even sitting on IRC, Skype, MSN and GTalk without a single disconnect.

My home setup

ADSL Router
1 X Windows Server 2003 (Automatic Updates Turned On)
2 X Windows XP Professionals (Automatic Updates Turned On)
Each of the XP's run Skype, MSN, GTalk and IRC.

Apart from that I have at least 2 extra machines and one more coming next week.

My point, I am happy with the service of the line from Telkom, the excellent support from WebAfrica, and the cheap SMC Router I bought for R 300.00 is doing a beautifull job.

dunno about you guys but I have two 837's and 1 877 and they all sync up at 4mb perfectly, one of the lines wouldn't sync up with the Telkom Billion or the Marconi but works on the cisco and is solid.

I'm running a total of 8 ciscos on ADSL and they all stay online, the only issue I have with them is the reconnect time on forced resets being around one and a half minutes.
