I used to have a 4mb/10mb line which synched at 8mb. Due to financial constraints a few months ago I went down to a 2mb uncapped bundle with Afrihost. Now I'm good to go back up and upgrade but cannot I'm apparently now limited to synch at 2048. See below message I got in my communication log:

"The speed selected ( 4096 ) is currently not supported in the DP where the end user is situated. The max speed in the DP is ( 2048 ) therefore please select a lower speed."

My exchange supports 10mb according to the support team and I checked online on broadbandstats.co.za

Also my SNR and line attenuation looks good.

Is this it and is there nothing I can do :(

I had a similar problem a few years ago. I enquired about downgrading, just to find the next morning that the downgrade was actually processed from 4meg to 1meg. When I called back they said that there were no 4meg ports available on the exchange....

I somehow remember a Telkom employee explaining that the system doesn't always release the "faster port" for use elsewhere. They had to do something, manually, on their end to get me back up.

I assume this is only a problem in areas with a high number of ADSL users - newer/less congested areas should be a breeze to move between speeds.

Just my 2 cents... :p

I checked that link Rickster and it reports

"Maximum speed available in your area is 1Mbps
Your current product speed is : 2Mbps"

Hopefully I can get the manual thing done...

I've put 3 different number from 3 different provinces (in 011, 031 & 041) into that http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/ checker, and all it comes back with is this :

ADSL availability and maximum speed supported by your exchange cannot be determined at this stage

At least with broadbandstats it give you more info, including which exchange you're on.

I hope you can get sorted - bloody frustrating.

+1. This is exactly why I still use bb-stats instead of the Telkom ADSL Checker.

Although the exchange supports 10mb, Telkom also does DP (Distribution Point) speed qualifying. So lets say that the distance of the DP and customer is in excess of 2.5km's, the 10mb service cant be provided. Because Telkom provides 10mb service up to 2.5kms and below. Remember that distance away from exchange etc. is critical for speed.

If you closer than 2.5kms..............then you have a fight. Good luck

Welcome to my word :) I have been dealing with this issue since November last year!

Maximum speed available in your area is 10Mbps
Your current product speed is : 4Mbps

according to http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/

and stats from a port recreate;

Your Download Quality
Current Speed: 4096 kbps
Signal Interference: 22.5 dB
Signal to Noise Ratio: 22 dB
Your Upload Quality
Current Speed: 512 kbps
Signal Interference: 40 dB
Signal to Noise Ratio: 13 dB

and then I get the "technician" telling me that the exchange won't support more than 2Mb, followed by my neighbor who applies for an upgrade from 1mb - 4mb and they give him 10Mb... same exchange. Rinse and repeat! I almost at the introduce 220v to copper line stage...

quick update, I'm 2.2km driving distance (under 2km line distance from exchange)
