We installed a bunch of downlights in our new house and they use GU10 bulbs but no clips to hold them in place like traditional down lights I am used to where once the clip is removed, the bulb drops down. I know how GU10 fittings work but for the life of me I cannot apply either sufficient upward or rotational force to get the fitting to release so I can change the bulb. Any tips or tricks? I know that there are tools like this, that have a suction cup to assist in rotating the bulb...

maybe this will help

Thanks but it doesn't really help  I will try again when I get home later but the fitting itself didn't look to be able to move other than to swivel a bit to direct the light. The GU10 fitting in the housing is fixed in place with the bulb slotting in to it instead of the bulb being held in place by a clip or the housing. In theory I need to apply upward and then anti clockwise rotational pressure to release the bulb from the GU10 fitting but I wasn't able to do it last night. Perhaps more brute force and less car like a builder will work.

Push up with your finger tips and turn counter clockwise while doing so.

Recently replaced mine with LED and also really struggled to apply enough force to remove them without breaking them (And did break 2)
Ended up removing the housing from the ceiling to replace some of the really tight ones.
It was easy enough to remove the housing for mine but since they are not all made the same, it might not be as simple for you.

That is what I am trying to avoid so probably not applying enough pressure so will try again before heading in to the ceiling to figure which ones are where and do it from above them.

I sometimes use both thumbs instead of my fingertips, but yes, it is pretty simple.

My downlights in my bathroom is different to the rest of my house.
Those ones come out with just my fingertips.
The rest... They just don't budge...

They are not all the same and not all as simple.

I managed to find the little plunger but all it did was pull the glass off the front of the light bulb
Isn't that plunger for those 12v that just pull out?

I wouldn't think so as I have only ever seen those bulbs be held in place with a clip which makes it a lot easier to change a bulb. The plunger in the picture is from one of the fittings we installed when renovating, which has the GU10 fitting in the light housing in a fixed position and the light is fixed in by nothing other than the GU10 fitting.

well now that you have pulled the glass off the bulb, can you use a long nose plier to grip the side and then turn it?

Yes, if the glass is off use long-nosed pliers. Exert outwards force so that the plier open ends are inside the bulb.

If the glass is not off, use non-slip cloth on the glass surface - slight upwards pressure and twist.
