I just returned from Canada and have noticed that they have unlimited downloads. Someone told me (i'm new to adsl so excuse my lack of knowledge) that SA has a 3G d/l limit? is this true. Say someone wanted to download 50G a month, is that possible in SA without paying an arma and 2 legs? if so which company and how?

From November, the cheapest way to download 50 gigs is to fly back to Canada, download what you need, and fly back. It would also be a lot faster.

It's not just a download limit, it is a traffic limit.
3GB total includes uploads and downloads combined.

You need to wait for clarification of the new price structure, due to be implimented on November 1st, before anyone can answer your second question, but I assure you it will cost an Arm, two Legs and probably a testicel for good measure.

Cheers
Chris

silkman, here a few facts...

a) The default cap is set at 3gb, until november the highest you can get is 30GB

b) Once capped you will have virtually nil international access, maybe, just maybe 3 KB/s, local speed is unaffected

c) Upload and download contributes to your cap

d) In november it is estimated for pricing to be round bout R75+- excl vat per gig and when capped then you will either buy more bandwidth or be hard capped.

e) anything non ftp/http is heavily shaped for international (p2p and games)

3 gig account set you back about R250, 30 Gig acc R200 with webafrica if you use the myadsl forum promotional code (this only lasts till end of october) otherwise bout R350 with axxess.

Backbone wise some of the ISP's you can try are...

SAIX: axxess, webafrica

Internet Solutions (IS): eastcoast access, gamco

DataPro: DataPro

DataPro will slow you down in november to about 4KB/s when capped in november.
SAIX will lock u down completely
Internet Solutions is unknown to what they are going to do.

Were I getting adsl this instant I would buy a 1 or more 30 gig acc's from webafrica with the promotional code since it would just be R200 per acc then, this month and next month then see which ISP has best to offer for november.
