Hi guys,

If I try and download something from an international site like download.com I get speeds below 50 kb/s. If it's a local site I get speeds above 300 kb/s.

This is in both FF and IE. Sure, I could use a download manager, but I'd like to know what the problem is?

I recently got my line upgraded to 4096, does this have anything to do with it? The connection is stable and it's syncing nicely.

Thanks,
tera ;)

Is it only on specific international sites or all of them?

I'm not sure, give me a couple to try please feo, I basically only know about Zdnet and Cnet, I'll try something from Softpedia quickly ;)

Edit: seems I just got full speed off Softpedia, so it's probably just download.com ;) :p Thanks feo!

Well, you're only trying out sites that offer software downloads and they're pretty busy ALL the time.

Rather try to download from an international site that's not as busy. Let me think of some..

See my edit above ;) I'd appreciate another site to test though :p

What sort of speeds do you get from here?

EDIT. Crap, I dunno where the download links are. Let me find another HD dload site.

I'm not instaling Quicktime as it's the no.1 grievance for FF and the type of sites I visit, so I can't tell you ;)

I get 20 kb/s average on that site ;)

Edit: or it just seems I'm following old links, that site is a mess dude.

Links get used and abused there, I know. Sorry man, just google for stuff that you like and see what speeds you get.

Just downloaded opera at full speed, installed it and tried download.com again, it's the same, so I'm sure it's not my line, probably some international problem which telkom needs to fix ;) :p

Thanks bro.

btw. I get nice speeds on the SAIX news server, about 250 kb/s average, which is acceptable ;)

Sounds low to me, if I had a 4Mb line I wouldn't be happy with anything less that 400kB/s off a news server.

Yeah, probably, but beggars can't be choosers hey? :p ;) :D

Now if only Telkom would bump the 384k users up to something better. :(

Believe me, I know how you feel. My ADSL road thusfar:

Started with 384 in 2005, late 2005 it got upgraded to 512 by telscum when we switched to a business line, 2005 till 2007, almost the end of the year and now I have 4mbps ;)

I've lived through the frustrations bro :p

Okay, it has to be my pc. I just downloaded the same file from download.com on our other pc and it was full speed.

What could the problem be? ;)

check your network settings - maybe errors on your network card? If you copy a file from one machine to the other is it fast?
Wouldn't harm doing a spyware/malware check.

Nevermind, it's download.com which is messing around. It seems international access isn't stable enough or something, some sites are fast, others really slow ;)

Maybe they're using a Telkom DSL link :p

lol, if only, then it would be faster. Do you know of any sites which I could use to test my line? Rapidshare is quite slow actually, I haven't got an account, but it dloads at about 68 kb/s ;)
