my downloads seem to be capped. I have never been able to download higher that 52.1Kb/s. A true 512kbps line should give me 64Kb/s max but i never see it. I have down loaded a 1 gig file and it never left 52.1Kb/s not higher not lower and this was off saix as well. Any one else notice this or does it just happen to me?

James, that speed is about right. Even when i was in the UK i couldn't get much more than that on a 512 line.

Telkom - South Africa's Handbrake to progress.

Maybe it depends how far you are from the exchange...
I'm getting max speeds of 55k or even 57k sometimes...

It's protocol overhead and line use .. on my 348 k package last night at 2:30Am I was downloading at about 55k/s

divided the kilobits (512) by 10
=~51,2kilobytes, so you're actually getting more than the average speed.

Counting down...
123 days till the end of Hellkom

512Kbps / 8 = 64Kb/s

Thanks James!

Computers are binary, 1 or 0, base 2, and no integer power of 2 is equal to 10. That is a shocking approximation that I wish people would stop using, 8 bits in a byte, no more, no less.

Karnaugh,

Does the protocol used in dsl conform to sync or async protocol? If it's the latter then there are 2 overhead bits/byte, which would mean you divide by 10 not 8.

Colin - I agree with your sentiment about shaping. Problem with having this as your signature is that when I search the forum for 'shaping' I get all your posts whether they are about shaping or not.

This is not intended as a criticism againt your signature as it could equally apply to anybody's signature that has a searched for word in it. Any idea how to disable the signature part of a post when searching a forum. You'd have thought that the search facility would ignore the signature part?
