Hi.

ISP: Telkom

For some reason the quality/signal strength fluctuates between one bar and three bars. I have just checked into my router settings and noticed that the network mode on my router is 4G and not LTE. (I have attached a screenshot.) Does this mean I don't have LTE nearby or that my sim is not LTE? It is showing blue on my router.

I have just done a speed test. I have never had it that the upload speed is faster than the download speed. 1.06Mb download. This is with THREE bars signal strength.

The fluctuation of the signal strength is VERY annoying. I have considered buying a stronger/external antenna but don't know which one.

I will appreciate your comments/advice.

Thank you.

Hi I am not aware of signal fluctuations, but on Friday morning my speeds dropped 1 Mps (and less!) down and 2.5 up. I re-powered my router and rebooted numerous times to no avail.
Reported to Telkom on FB and they said they were not aware of any issues. Said they would look into it. During the day it varied between red light on router and very slow speeds. I presumed they were testing. On Saturday morning just after 1am full speeds returned and have stayed so since.
I am in Rustenburg. Telkom uncapped LTE.
Possibly you should try to report to Telkom on FB and see if they can do something.

Hi Hans.

Thank you for the reply. I am in Kempton Park. I will report on FB as you have suggested and hope for the best. What specific FB page of Telkom must I report to? Telkom seems to have a lot of pages.

Hi,

So my experience with Telkom LTE is that the correct antenna position is critical to this product working correctly with good & stable performance.

There are many other factors that could also be at play here such as:
Congested Tower
Limited Tower Backhaul
Router receiving poor signal
The list goes on...

My advice would be try and locate where you tower is and then purchase a Poynting XPOL006- mount it or have it mounted correctly and you'll see a dramatic improvement in terms of stability & performance.
This page should give you a good idea as to where your nearest tower is: http://www.telkom.co.za/today/unlimited-broadband/

Also worth noting that the wifi on some of the Huawei LTE routers is rubbish so unless you're running ethernet from the router, I would suggest purchasing a better access point at some stage- preferably an 802.11ac unit to prevent co-sharing of wifi channels with neighbours.

Keep us posted..

Hi Marlin.

Thank you so very much in replying to my question. I was at Poynting on Friday and almost bought this one:
http://www.antennas.co.za/Products/ProductDetails?code=346

I ended up not buying since the sales lady was uncertain if it would help. How can I establish where the closest tower to us is?

Thank you once again.

No probs...

Use the website in my previous reply to find your closest tower. Then take a drive to try find it. If you can ascertain where the tower is in relation to your home and you have line of sight or not to the tower, I would suggest buying the poynting xpol006 - this will give you best performance from their range in terms of LTE antennas.

Once you have an antenna, with or without line of sight, you should login to the router page whilst you have access to antenna and adjust it till you get the best possible stats.

See this page for good signal stats:

Thanks Marlin. Really appreciate your help & advice.

No probs - others here have helped me out so just returning the favour.
Let me know if you need any other help.

Edit: forgot to mention that once you have an external antenna, you'll need to change the antenna settings on the router to external 1&2.

Also, you need to change the network settings to 4G only
