when I am downloading I normally do a speed test to see the speed. most of the time it is around 8 mb since I am using an 10 mb line. my question is: on the download page on my pc the highest speed I get is around 300kb/s, now how come the adsl speed is 8mb/s but I can only download at 300kb/s?

Please state your ISP as well as the package you have taken. It is possible they are shaping you OR they maybe a problem somewhere else.

Speedtests are only but an indication and should not be used as a proper measure of how much speed you can squeeze from your line. Line quality, isp shaping, international links rerouted (recently :p) and overhead can all but contribute to poor speeds. What software are you using to measure your download speed and are you downloading using a single connection or using a download manager (opens multiple connections)?

Also login to your router and post your stats here. If you are unsure about this, please ask and we can help you out :).

The difference between Mb and MB. 1MB = 8Mb. (someone correct me if I'm wrong, just woke up from my hangover nap)

if you get around 800kb/s on your speedtests but only 300kb/s with actual real life downloading, your ISP is giving higher priority to the speedtests to bend stats.

...or the server you are downloading from doesn't have the capacity.
Have you tried downloading from fast servers? (Microsoft for example) or have you tried downloading two/three things at once?
