I mean I drove past an area yesterday wtih an illegal drag night (not watching or participating - needed food) and I thought if cops suddenly raided or pounved - what could they do, aside from dispersing the crowd?

Arrest those driving recklessly and confiscate their vehicles, take away their licenses, put their asses in jail.....there is a lot they can do, but if they don't even bother stopping people not stopping at stop streets, not arresting drunk drivers etc etc then they lose their power and that is where we are right now..

I live in Somerset West and on the Kuilsriver road there are dices twice a week. And if I know about it how can the cops not know about it but nothing is done, they just keep on doing it.
Well bieng a drag lover since i was 7, I went to most illegal events, and the atmosphere is 100% greater than a sanctioned event at Tarlton. Its unsafe and lots of bystanders can get hurt.
Police rocks up and we all run like ants.
Normally like in CT I know we used to get adjetated with police when the spoil the "fun" but this is not fun at all, parking off with some cars playing some sound and sitting and having a dop or two is nice, relaxing, but then mixing that with people doing donuts and drifting between parked cars(Kimberley) you take the fun away from it and open a window of opportunity to disaster!
Cops do the right thing...its a spoilsport kind of move, but its right! One Easter in Kimberley, when people go car mad, the Police Casper pulled up to the fourway interchange where people were doing donuts, and the law has been so pissed on that one mint black 325is owned by my buddy went infront of the Police Casper and did donuts and went closer and closer to the Casper and then in a plume of smoke shot out in one direction and sped off...the Casper stood there for 2 mins and then it left as well, and people liked the fact that some **** could disobey the police like that and it started going mad...needless to say,, like all sheep, another guuy tried it in an e36 M3 and he hit the curb broke the wheel clean off and the tow truck came, took his car and cops arested him for neglegent and driving under the influence...and they don't understand why cops arrest them...stupid people do stupid things...
I said that this incident with jub Jub and the V-Tec drivers in the Cape will open the book again for cops targeting any gathering, any car that looks like its been modified or even revving, they'd think people are dicing...i say take it to the strips there are dicing going on every weekend...pay the R50 and dice there!

so do that....step one...show people you have the balls to use the law.
In the US I was pulled over because myself and the guy riding with me (2 bikes) nailed it from a traffic light. Yes, we were messing about a bit, but wasn't really racing. Got pulled and got a good talking to. Cop made it very clear that my ass belonged to him and he could take my license and make me walk if I didn't kiss his ass. It was done with authority, and I didn't push my luck again. When I go over there, boy, I observe their laws 'cause those cops don't take your crap.
In a perfect world, we need some of that......
there is nothing wrong with Drag Racing... i have been involved in drag racing for over 15 years and i have been to many many many events.. and it's the stupid people out there that think that are better then others that's spoil the fun for us guys... the cops want us off the streets.. they why doesn't the Goverment build a track for us to go and race.. then things will stop.. i've been a proper racing days ( tarlton ) there have been more accidents there and on proper tracks then on the streets.. yes it's dangerous.. but people are aware of whats going on..
i take my hat off to the police that are doing this to take us off the roads... but do something for us to carry on with the racing...

If it is such a popular sport then why doesn't your "organisation" build you a track? Why should the government provide hand outs to a less popular sport like this when there are bigger sports needing the funds?
the sport it popular.. the goverment won't do anything for this cause it won't put money in their pockets... so they will just make an issue out of it.. where on the other hand this promotes business for the racing companies out there that's all...
and to add to this note..there is a track that is getting built which once it's done it's for the racers.. the person had to put out from his own pocket to get this going...

nothing wrong with drag racing, as long as its in a controlled environment ... the issue with it being done illegally is the danger other road users are put in, which i dont think is cool ... at all
i say if you put your own life in danger that's fine and your prerogative, but dont put other peoples as well ... Wesbank offered a nice venue and was very popular ... pity about that ... be nice to find an abandoned airstrip ... like M5board does ...

I attend( watch not race) most illegal drags in capetown, and mostly the cops arrive and spoils the fun.
The cops mostly tell the people to leave the area as we not allowed to gather, fines get issued if the same people get caught a 2nd or 3rd time gathering.
Legal drags, like at killarney in cpt is nice to watch but not as fun as on the street!

Adamr i totally agree with that you have just said...... there is nothing wrong with it.. there are many many roads that are "dezerted" (forgive spelling)... yes Wesbank was the place to be for the racing.. most of the street racers went there.. now think of this you have to travel 100Km's + to get to tarlton by the time you get there you have to put more fuel to race.. wesbank damn we miss you man...
street racing only becomes dangerous when you get people that have a bit too much to drink and can't think about the other people that's when it gets dangerous... they can't think for themselfs that's it's going to make a mess.. and yet they do it..
other then that the places that have been used for racing there is plenty space for people to "hide" from the cars..

believe me i'm all for going to the track and race and what not.. not worried about having fun at the track or not.. but there are many cars out there that will not go all the way to tarlton to go and race their car..
or other tracks out there... the streets have got more rep for a driven then the actualy track.. on the track you come to the race with extra mods and all that.. on the street you race with what you got and that is what makes it interesting to go and watch/race

...the thing is my initial response to techi earlier was a little more scathing and along the lines of the drag racers not wanting organised races as they then lose the thrill of the illegality of what they are doing and the supposed cool factor. I thought let me be fair and deleted it and rather focussed on the track aspect but here you have confirmed what I knew!

if you think that it has nothing to do with there being no tracks out there.. then think of this.. when WESBANK RACEWAY was open.. go and find out how much street racing was happening...Nothing.
.. people used to wait for the track to be opened up on the wednesday and friday and later during the years they opened up Sundays.. and they made the atmosphere there some nights as it was on the streets....and people had fun.. and that was a track... the guys sold the track. the racers has no where to go.. so we go back on the streets...
what's there to be a Idiot about? if you had a tunning shop and wanted to get business what would you do? go and watch races where your spectators are a possible 50 people or go to a place where the people are 1000-2000 people...?
