Drama as ANC official defects to NFP
23-MAR-2011 | MIKE NKALANE | COMMENTS
THERE was high drama in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, yesterday when an ANC ward councillor defected from the ruling party with 200 followers to join the new National Freedom Party.

When former IFP chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi launched her breakaway party in KwaZulu-Natal last month many thought the NFP would not attract members in other provinces.

But ANC Makhaza ward councillor Thobile Ludidi and about 200 ANC members walked over to the new party on Sunday night.

Isn't this the same area that has problems with open toilets? Maybe, just maybe, people in this area have seen through the ANCYL's BS and are now looking elsewhere for help. This new NFP might just be the strong black opposition that we have been yearning for.

I'm white, but I'll gladly vote for a "black" opposition party, as long as they get the job done, and stop all the corruption in the government. I don't get the whole color issue when it comes to voting...

Unfortunately, colour plays a big role given our history of racial segregation.

The only advantage the NFP has, is they’re **not** the ANC. A honeymoon period of looting (what is left) by leadership lies ahead.

anc memebers to defect to any other party are welcome. :)
Mmm, not so sure -- depends why they defect. Here in the Western Cape the ANC is riven by factionalism. Many wannabee petty-politicians in the ANC who've been left off the party's local elections list are now scrambling about forming their own parties and 'defecting' to others in a last-ditch bid to get elected. Once in office they'll quickly join up with the ANC again. I'm also highly suspicious of these 'defectors' because it shows they're motivated not by party principles but by personal ambition for power ... exactly the types who see municipal office as a way of plundering the public purse. The last thing any other party needs is these defectors from the ANC! What SA needs is the VOTERS defecting, not the politicians.

It may not make sense, but given the past, it's understandable why black people would be hesitant to vote for a "white" party. That's why I've always maintained that the DA needs more black people in higher positions, and especially a black leader as the face of the party.

Which means you will appoint people based on the colour of their skin and not merit, it that realy what you want?

Off course not, but not everyone sees it that way, and in the short term it is necessary. Start appointing people based on merit once you gain power, just like the ANC started appointing friends and family once they gained power. Play them at their own game, but play it to the benefit of the country.

Well he'll hopefully take at least his 200 supporters and a few more in the area to the NFP. I doubt they'll win a whole ward under the NFP banner (and there probably isn't even a banner).

You will also get some ANC defectors who are really fed up with the ANC, it's not hard to believe. They get to see the inner workings up close daily.

+ another blow to the local ANC: http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/western-cape/drama-at-anc-s-cape-offices-1.1045677 Branch members blockaded the Provincial headquarters over election lists.
