Drastic plan to improve N1

Statistically, internationally this hasn't worked. If you build more roads, the traffic situation improves, then more people use their cars, and you are back at the same level of congestion as before, a couple of Rbillion later.

Yes but all those extra cars consume more fuel which generates taxes in fuel and licensing for the government.

With your reasoning we would still have a single lane highway between JHB and PTA.
All that does is it stops cities from growing and forces urbanisation to spread out over larger areas.

I know it is working in holland, and they are enforcing it with cameras. Break the law and you get a fine:)

So the cameras are able to identify the number of people in a car?

What stops me from using false number plates or removing my number plates altogether?
I just need to look for the same model car with the same color and use his registration number. Makes his life a misery but I won't have to worry about fines.

It may have worked internationally but remember in SA the only way to get from A to B is by car.
I think the only reason they put camera's on the highway was to try and enforce this. They rather could used that R28Mil to build another lane or at lease at Alendale

A better plan would be to prevent cars getting on the highway between 6-8 at Alendale

A noticible difference between the trucks here and in the US is that there, they are all big and FAST, I dove there for a month and didn't notice any going a quarter the speed as they do here.

Say what? Perhaps they should prevent you from accessing the highway

Oh my... I have to agree with ajax.... what is happening to this world

Building more roads is not a viable option, The highway between pta and jhb is already 3 lanes the entire distance and 4-5 lanes at certain places.... It is physically impossible to make the road 4-5 lanes for the entire difference.

3 lanes should suffice if the following happened

1. Less people lived in a different city to what they worked in
2. We had a train system from pta to jhb
3. Current laws where enforced
4. Trucks where banned during peak hours
5. Put an automated toll booth to make people car pool or find alternative routes.

Where in the USA was that?
More than half of the USA is so flat that trucks aren't forced to slow down at all.
I mean Chicago is only about 200 meters above sea level even though it's 1158km inland from New York.

Most of the trucks I encounter on the roads here are going plenty fast on the level or at frightening speeds downhill - it's the uphills that are a problem.
I get over taken on the N1 by 10 to 20 ton coal/sand trucks doing 130-140km/h.

The problem is not just that you need transport from PTA to JHB, you need transport everywhere. If you want to go get a bite to eat at lunch, go to the pharmacy, clients, pickup the post etc you need a car. Its not like overseas when you can just hop on the tube to get you downtown. Even if there is a gautrain (bwahaha) from JHB to PTA, people still need cars to get about in JHB.

It is very rare that I need to drive anywhere during working hours, my mate travels in with someone else and if he needs to ever go somewhere he just takes my bike....

I generally just walk when I need to get around in JHB... It's going to be a huge mindshift for people....

/I think I may have got ajax and ajak confused there

Close down Alendale on ramp

But serious Don't you think closing down Alendale on ramp will be better than trying to force people to travel together?
Because that is what is causing the traffic jam in the mornings

Errr, stop contradicting yourself, it hurts me brain! :(

Anyway, if i read this correctly, they wanna close the outside lane for normal traffic, what will the be deal at off- and onramps?

Also , allendale is the mean reason for the kilometres long backup on the highway, seems to keep the whole part slow most of the day now. They should also do something about the intersection at that Crowthorne shopping centre, its backup the whole day (going north from Kyalami).

Express car pool lanes work but you need to have more than two lanes to implement it.

This looks like another case of well intentioned people forgetting to take their common sense pills.

This cannot work without proper public transport alternatives. I invisage a congestion tax soon. It will be incredibly unfair...

ajak = afrikaans en praat baie stront (sorry oom :D )

ajax = english

hope I got it right... :p :D

I'm glad I don't drive the Ben Schoeman, the part at Allandale is always a nightmare...
