My 8 y/o lad despise anything to do with colouring in. However, he loves drawing and creating things, whether it's with Lego, Zoob or pencil and paper.

He has shown a bit of love and passion for creating things, especially engineering and robotics.

I came across these (Modo & Sketchup) software downloads for drawing, and was wondering if anyone had come across anything (preferably freeware) which I could introduce my lad to.

For the time being it's more about seeing how goes with it ... just to expose him to it and see if it is something he'll enjoy.

TIA

Modo is some serious software - not really for drawing it's more for 3d sculpting, the UI takes some time to figure out. If he figures that out you may as well use blender - it's free, can be tricky to get to grips with but will allow you to create nearly anything. None of these are aimed at kids but hey - give it a go. Blender has a fantastic support group (youtube, forums etc.)

Trying to think of something simpler tho...hmmm....

OpenToonz was made opensource by Studio Gibli. They did movies like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc.

For 3d there's also Sculptris (bought by the guys that make zBrush). It's still free and you can sculpt some pretty cool (but basic) 3d things.

You're a good dad McT, encouraging your lad to get into this stuff.

Thank you :o My philosophy with my children is to never ever push them into something they don't want to do - even if it pains me sometimes to hold back. But if my kids show an aptitude toward something (academics, hobby or sport), I'll do what I can within my means to give them an opportunity.
