These devices allow the user to run a home network through their electricity grid, effectively negating the need for ungainly and long Ethernet cables or unreliable wireless connections.
This is one of the most pleasant products I’ve ever reviewed. I plugged the two sample units that were supplied to us into power sockets in separate rooms, connected a PC to each, and everything simply worked.
I then disconnected one of the PCs and instead connected my router, restoring my normal home network configuration, and was able to promptly forget about it: it ran seamlessly and transparently in the background.
Unfortunately, without two notebooks to test the two units with, I was unable to check whether the ‘system’ worked during a power failure. Nevertheless, in such a situation, odds are that your PoE network will be of no use to you anyhow.
Over a period of more than a month, the system suffered ‘glitches’ only twice, and it required both units to be unplugged and then plugged back in. In both cases, network functionality was immediately restored.
Essentially, these devices are the epitome of ‘plug and play’ - in a very literal sense.
Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a third and fourth test unit, so we were unable to test the functionality of several of these together.
This is the only reason why I have not awarded it a perfect score, though it may well deserve it.
