Since you would connect to one of the original drifta's via wifi, and it not being secured in anyway, the ipad would assume that the drifta is its internet connection, eventhough it would not be able to connect to anything, what are the implications that your neighbours could be sniffing this traffic? Especially if you have background apps trying to check mail, and such?. They could sniff all traffic to and from the drifta

Firstly, they would have to be really close neighbours. Because the range on my Drifta wifi is very limited. More than 10m line of sight and my signal strength is less than 20%. So I doubt that is a worry. But assuming that they somehow have connected to your Drifta wifi, then obviously they can sniff. But who would want to.

As regards to security, you would be in the situation of ensuring that the apps you use are using some form of encryption protocol if you're that paranoid.

The Drifta is made for mobile use, which means you probably shouldn't be using it at home really. That's what the full scale decoders are for. Therefore mobile life is +-2hrs. Good luck sniffing enough data in that time frame to get good information. They would really have to want your stuff badly to do this.

I'm general, this is tin foil hat scenarios. A 1 in a million chance that someone even wants to do this.

My understanding is that drifta only accepts one connection at a time anyway, thereby rendering the concern moot.

Visiting a friend regularly that lives in a town house complex, they dont have dstv, so i use my drifta, to catch up on some sport or such, so the neighbours would be close enough to sniff traffic.. im not sure why multichoice would release a device, without some form of security, unless it doesnt matter?.. i know the drifta does not pass any routing information via dhcp, just the ip and netmask, but if you have background tasks trying to get internet access, surely its broadcasting all this over the drifta's wifi hotspot.

You can make a physical wifi connection to the drifta for more than 1 person, its just that more than 1 person cannot connect to the dvb-h stream
