Can't you read. The OP was trying to compare the safety of the trip to what happened in KZN. Stop trying to be funny and post something useful towards the question asked.

The N1 between Cape Town and Joburg is generally in excellent condition. Watch out for the speed cops though, especially outside Bloemfontein, Colesberg, Richmond and anywhere between Three Sisters and Cape Town. There are average speed cameras between Three Sisters and Du Doorns, so watch your speed on those long N1 Karoo stretches.

I stay in Welkom and my daughter in Summerset West. I also travel regularly to JHB. It's beautiful road with no potholes. There are a lot of big lorries traveling the road but very well behaved and courteous. Very nice and clean stopover at Three sisters Travalia Guest Farm can be recommended. Thry do have a nice farmstall and butchery as well.
 
-32.161188, 22.874805 ... position of last average speed camera on the N1 going north. N1 is fine to travel regularly, went once from Cape Town via Port Nolloth to Pretoria for a change of scenery.

There’s no reason you need to be there yesterday.

And for the love of all sanity sleep over somewhere halfway (Die Klei Pot in Colesberg is excellent) and stop this foolish behaviour of making it a day trip.

It shouldn’t be a single day trip and a race to the finish, because that really isn’t safe for anyone and why we have much of the carnage we do on the roads.

In case you forget to slow down at the right spots prepare your story. I made a mistake in Nov near Bloemfontein and was stopped speedin at 149 km/h ... no fine, no bribes, etc. as the officer said ... "I don't want to spoil your day".

They are not unreasonable people.

I got stopped at Colesberg once and he wanted me to come over to the camera and see how much I was doing I said it’s fine I know it was 138 or some such odd number because I had cruise control on and the GPS showed it the whole time.

He was impressed that I was well aware and I was open about being guilty and told him it’s fine to write the fine no hard feelings.

Asked me where I was going and where I came from etc and then we chatted a couple of minutes and then pretty much sent me on my way.

Drove down in December, Road was pretty nice. Double lanes basically stop after Bloemfontein. You then rely on double road coming in increments but it gives you enough time to pass trucks.
Stayed on the N1 for the whole trip, was quite a nice drive.

Beautiful scenery and great butcheries. Take a cool box. If you don't want to miss the Biltong Bar at Trawal (and you don't), it's an extra 50kms, but you skip the piece of dirt road.
