Morning all,

I know there are lots of threads on this subject, and they pop up every now and then, but I thought I would start a new one since I have a few questions to ask, and hopefully get updated information.

I need to renew my driver license this week. I reside in Centurion but want to avoid going to the Centurion licensing centre, because of the apparent lack of service there.

1. What are my other options, in terms of location? I heard the one in Midrand is not too busy? Otherwise Rayton or Akasia? Also, does the tactic of going there 13:00-14:00 still work?

2. Cost - I believe it is R228...is this still correct?

3. Documents to take - I will be taking my ID, a copy of ID and my current license. I understand you don't need to take photos anymore, is this correct?

4. Someone told me it helps to download the application form from the ENatis website...do they accept this? Apparently it is the DL1 form.

5. Do I need to get myself a temporary license? My current one has not expired yet. The way I understand it, is that you don't need a temp one if you renew your lic before the expiry date, your receipt for the new one is sufficient, but if it has expired already you would need to get the temp one. Is this correct?

Thanks!

Step 1: Go to your local optometrist and get them to do a quick eye test and give you a certificate. This helps a lot and you don't have to use the crappy eye test machines at the testing station. My optometrist in Menlyn charges R10-00 for the test and certificate.

Step 2: wake up very early and get to Centurion traffic department just before 6am. Take a black pen with you. ID book and current licence needs to be with you as well. Take 2 photos with (black & white) if you want a temporary licence done.

Step 3: stand/sit in the queue until around 8 when they open the doors and start taking people in 10 at a time. There is a dude that will walk down the queue and hand out DL1 forms, so no worries there.

Step 4: do the application, be friendly, pay your fees and walk out by 9.

Total cost for everything was R300, but I got a temp licence as well.

I renewed my licence two weeks ago at Centurion and no issues with crap service. Just don't get to the Centurion testing station any time after 6-30am or you WILL be in a queue for the rest of the day, guaranteed.
By the time I left, the queue was already well into the parking area and the sun was beating down.

This is exactly what I did a few weeks back. Was at the office at 10:00, 30th in the queue.

Also, do not go on a Friday, half the country think they can take "long" weekend, then you end up sitting there the whole day.

I went in at 2:20 as the doors close at 2:30.
Did the eye test and left with my forms.
Returned monday morning at 7:00, walked in, paid and left.

Quick question(s), if I may.
If you have a car drivers license, and you get another, say motorcycle license, do you get two cards or are both printed on the same card?
So if I have a car license expiring in say 6 months, but instead of renewing it I get my bike lcence.

Will both be on the one card and will both be valid for the full term ?

Sorry for the hijack :)

So if I understand it correctly, i

You only need cash, ID book, and Old Drivers License to renew.

Copies of ID are not require?
Photos are only required if you need a temp license?

All centres in the WC are now insisting on proof of address as well. Take a recent utility bill just in case...

Do you need some sort of police affidavit if you've lost your license?

Well if you don't say you lost it or it was stolen, then you don't need to provide anything.

In January I had to get a new licence, they didn't ask for the expired one. All I had to take was copy of ID, original ID , and photos if I wanted a Temp licence. I didn't take a temp licence so no photos needed.

Then in June my car was stolen with Licence , so when I went to apply for a new one, I didn't tell them it was stolen. I just did the same as I did in January.

When had to do it, they didn't need anything from the police. Just go in and tell them that it's lost and they'll take some of your money and re-issue the license.
