We’re inviting our most loyal Pittsburgh customers to experience the future first. If a Self-Driving Uber is available, we’ll send it along with a safety driver up front to make sure the ride goes smoothly. Otherwise it’s uberX as usual.

This pilot is a big step forward. Real-world testing is critical to the success of this technology. And creating a viable alternative to individual car ownership is important to the future of cities.

Wow, wasn't expecting trials to start so soon, but the future is here already it seems :wtf:

It is self driving (For a significant portion of the trip). It is certainly not driverless

We need this here. Might put an end to the rapes and robberies.

Can one hijack a driver;less car easily?

No but they can steal it.

EDIT:
Dark night getting a lift home in a driverless uber. Middle of ****ing nowhere/veld on either side. Someone placed an object in the middle of the road. Car stops and you see armed people approaching from out of the veld. Car won't go because there is an object in the way. Rip.

Yeh, my comment was rather tongue in cheek. I don't think driverless will be an option for anything in SA for a while....

If the car doesn't have a steering wheel it would be impossible to steal. So they might rob the people inside, but the car can be programmed to only respond to its owner.

As I understand it, driverless cars will always have a manual override and full control by a driver if needed
