My drivers license has expired and can explode any moment. Nevermind I can go to prison for up to a year. I have an extreme fear of public servants and having to go to the System is Offline Department and stand in a queue like a hobo at a soup kitchen. But somehow it needs to get done. I can Google the following but the government mafia might track me down.

1. What is the grace period after it has expired.

2. What all do I need to take with? Do one still need to get photos taken or do they do everything there?

3. Is a rental lease fine for proof of residence? Do they need to keep a copy, in other words do I need to get certified copies made?

4. I also need to get a new license plate apparently. Can this be done at the same defartment?

5. See 1,2,3 and 4 above.

Actually I am just posting this for moral support and encouragement.

SOLVED:

15 minutes done. 30 minutes considering that I had to run across the road to get a photo (need one but they only do 4), copy of address and copy of ID. Paid with card.

There is no grace period you are royally screwed... In reality there is as much grace time as you wish, the card has expired not your drivers license, there is no penalty at all

So I don't have to renew it?

Insurance won't pay out if your licence expired without good reason for not renewing and you can get fined for driving with a expired licence.
Just obey the overlords your life will be easier.

Nope, insurance won't pay out if your cars license has expired, not your drivers license card. Plus you cannot be fined as there is no fine for it. The only fine is if you don't have a drivers license.

So @Lupus is lying. Now my anxiety is worse.
Nope I am not, there is no fine and the only one who insists are rental agencies. Insurance companies use e-natis to check if you have a valid license, not the card itself. All my claims in my all my life I've never once even given them my card.

you will get a huge fine if they stop you at a road block - mine was expired for two years (sheer laziness on my part) and they stopped me at a road block and i got a R2k fine
You got a fine for what? What did the ticket actually say? Cause there is no fine or law against the card being expired. It sounds like you had a traffic cop who didn't know the law themselves. Cause for R2k it would've probably been driving without a valid license, which is incorrect, as your license is still valid.

But naughty got a 2k fine!

So who is lying here.

P.S. See question #5

Good luck. Tried to renew mine last week, Monday and Tuesday they were offline. Wednesday I did everything and when I went to pay they said I've got an administration mark on my license. I must contact a number in Cape Town than no one ever answers or email them, on an address that no one answers on. My cars licence is also expired and cannot be renewed, and I'm driving to the free state in a month and a bit so need this all sorted before then. Arseholes, the lot of them.

Cause the traffic cop probably fined him for an invalid license, as the traffic cop doesn't know the law himself. Naughty could've had the fine squashed by just showing them they have a valid license. Which is on e-natis.

I understand. This is really helpful. But let's say for arguments sake we want to avoid the drama. See question #5.

That's racist (of them) !

This does not help my anxiety.

Here is just one example of insurers saying that they will weigh the merits. That means they can refute your claim and if there is a lot of money involved you can bet they will take it as an option.

You can also be fined for driving with an expired licence.
