hey guys,
ok I am a dumbass for only realising my drivers expired in Jan this year. My mom bought the topic up and i presumed i was safe till 2012 at least.I was like WTF when i saw it's 5 months overdue :wtf: Anyone know what the penalties/fine will be? I'm sure they've heard it a billion times but damn yeah i totally forgot .

No penalty as far I know. If a cop stops you, you will get a fine though. When you go and renew (go soon especially for insurance purposes), make sure you get a temporary license, because it takes several months for them to produce the new card.

All government departments are hell derivatives. Make sure you take your ID, old drivers license card, 1 photo (for the temporary license), Cash for card fee and temporary license, COPY of your ID (god knows why). If you can phone the department where you are going, ask the fckers if their bs enatis system is online and what you require. Doubt they'll answer the phone though. Best to go before 12pm. Most of early crowd has cleared and you minimise the chances of them suddenly deciding they've worked enough for the day. But definitely before 2pm. Make sure you ask the security guard or information person at the entrance which is the right queue and collect and complete the correct form. You'll need to go the queue for the eye test first (so take your glasses/contact lenses if required), then wait in the queue to hand in the form and pay.

Finally take a pen. I also take my proof of residence wherever I go to apply/renew for stuff, because you can't seem to do anything without it nowadays, although they don't need it for drivers license renewals, but you never know. There's always a new requirement.

Unfortunately not true. Mine was 1 day over its expiration date and I paid a penalty amount around R120 or something. I can't recall.

All you need to do is take your ID (and a copy of your id - in case their copiers are out of paper as usual), 4x B&W ID photos. I took 4x color photos the day before my drivers expired and they sent me back - hence I paid penalties.

We dont need to take pics in KZN. Automated system nowadays, digital pic, eye test, thumb print scan and signature... R250 and u done (but they only pitch for work at 10H25)

the opto eye test thing is a bit daft in our case, considering that they let you do the eye-test while they complete your application with thumbprints and photos etc. So there's not much use in skipping the eye test at the dept. :/

It's six weeks max - not several months. I got mine within 3 weeks.

When i went to do my eye test at spec-savers (before booking my drivers) I still had to wait in the same queue becuase this one lady had to sign and verify it, but ive noticed that municipalities differ from town to town

I found Midrand one to be quiet most of the time, and when busy it still flowed. Dont know if its still like that.

I was 2 months over, paid a fine, it was a set fee per month you are over.

I don't get why they do this...

What happens if you go overseas for a few years? Who is going to pay some massive fine for an expired license?

made me check when mine is expiring!!

How long before your license expires can you go to renew? Mine is expiring in September. I am already breaking out in a sweat thinking about having to go into the traffic office in Marlboro to renew! BLEH!

My wife's was expired (2 months) when we went to get it done and we didn't need to pay any penalty/fine. It really doesn't make sense why you would need to pay a penalty. It's not like a motor vehicle license (disc) renewal. They can't prove you were driving. And if you were not driving, it's your business if you didn't renew your license.

Yes, the photos are for temp license, so they do tend to accept it.

Why would you want to brave hell just for the chance it may be ready. If they say 6 weeks, my experience says double that. My wife went after 10 weeks and it wasn't ready. Why oh why can't they sms or email you to say it's ready?
