I have to renew my drivers licence this year, and I was told that I have to do an eye test using a chart. Now when I first applied for my learners years ago, I know that I only looked in to that machine they use, which optometrists have as well. Anyone use at a chart?

I've also read that you can go to the optometrist and have the test done which might be slightly less stressful than doing it at the traffic department.

meh just go to traffic dep. All they want to know is that you aren't blind as a bat. The standards are pretty low.

Last time I did the test it was a peripheral vision test (blinking light in peripheral vision & you say which side) and 5x squares with diagonal lines. Easily scored +- perfect.

+1 to this ... did mine last week actually and that was how they did the test.

We do the "drivers" tests all the time for patients. It barely takes 5 minutes to complete the test. It is quite scary to see people popping in because "the people at the traffic department did not want to give me a license"... and then finding out they are almost blind! They claim to have 20/20 vision and then one gets results of barely above 0.1 visual acuity...and then of course they storm out and drive off in their car because you also do not want to give him his purple pass certificate

Okay, thanks. I knew a chart wasn't involved. I was pretty sure of that.

^^ This... just to reiterate - their standards are suuuuper low! Not that that's very reassuring for the rest of us well-sighted people :)
