Drivers license expiring and inconvenient time

My fiance's license is expiring on the 4th of December. We're getting married on the 12th and then going away until the 1st of January.
Is there some kind of grace period on an expired drivers license? Can she wait until January to renew or must she renew now and then get a new license in January that reflects the change in surname?

You have a 1 month grace period after it expires. If you feel that's cutting too fine then rather go get a temporary one - valid for 6 months. Not sure about the name change though... wouldn't she have to apply for a new ID first before using it to renew her drivers license anyway?

You can get a temporary drivers licence (6 months).

I would get the temp drivers now, then wait until January, then go for the new one (together with all the paperwork). I think she will also need to take her new ID (with her new surname etc) on as well...

Just renew it now... it takes about 6 months for marriage name changes to take effect.

If you make the application, then they issue a sort of certificate that says you applied that you just keep in your car. I think it is valid for 3 months or so.

Don't they usually send it back to the place where you applied for the license or do we have an option to specify that they must send it back to Centurion?

Unless we maybe get a temporary one for her while on honeymoon (think that is issued immediately). Then just get the proper renewal after her new ID has been issued.

I have had one license for 7 years after it expired before renewing it. They wanted me to pay for a Temp license and I refused. Just renewed it as normal. Her driver's license NEVER expires. The card does. They will probably fine her for it having expired but she can just renew it when it suits her. Don't know the insurance implications though.

Mine was expired for ten years before I renewed it. No fine. Paid normal fee + extra for a temp.

No. She should just walk in and claim it. If they have questions she can just say she wasn't driving for that period and forgot about it.

Once you pass your drivers licence, it NEVER expires. What does expire is the licence card. Driving without a drivers licence card or expired licence card does not indicate that you are not licenced to drive a car.
