The government has not been printing driver's licenses for the past five months and if your license has expired, there is no way to get a replacement.

They have all kinds of excuses blaming striking workers but in reality it is just part of the slide towards a failed state. Our government seems to be incapable of managing the public service and the public service is incapable of basic administration.

With insurance companies being in the news in the last few days, I wonder what will happen if a person whose license has expired has an accident? Will his insurance company repudiate the claim because he does not have a valid driver's license?

What about traffic officials? We know they are not the sharpest knives in the cutlery drawer. Will they act against these drivers?

As far as I know, your Drivers license does not expire. It is the card that it is printed upon that expires.

Insurance companies cannot repudiate your claim if your card license is expired. Some of them will just require you to produce a valid renewed card license before processing is all.

As far as I know you need to get a temporary license if you have renewed your card and it's over 3 months expired.

Don't be dramatic. It is because of a strike by workers who want to be made permanent that there are delays.

A strike that lasts for 5 months??? It is not just delays. I was told this morning that they are not producing any for the last 5 months. No, my friend, it is clear that our government has totally lost control.

My son applied for a license renewal two months ago and received the new license this week (Tuesday) so it can't be true that they haven't printed any in the last 5 months.

Your license card is just proof that you have a license. Your license never expires. Insurance will ask you to go get a temp one and submit it to them if you have claim and your card has expired.

I phoned the e-Natis people this morning because I applied for a renewal in July. They told me that they are very sorry but that I will probably not receive a renewal soon because they have stopped producing licenses. I think your son was very lucky. Maybe one of the managers wanted to see if their machines still work and produced your son's license as a test :)

I also received mine after applying middle August so do not think its grinded to a standstill. Also the temporary license is just a money making scheme for the department as looking at the transport act, there is no mention of one at all in there and your driver's license is issued to you indefinitely until such a time as the minister of transport declares otherwise.

OP you have the story a little bit wrong. Licenses were not produced during a time frame that stretched over July/August, due to strikes or whatever. After that time frame, production went back to "normal", and people are getting their licenses again.

They just do not seem to make a plan to catch up the missing licenses from that time frame, as people who fell victim to it, still haven't received theirs.

Both my father-in-law and boss at work are still waiting for theirs, they applied in July. Everybody that applied from late August onwards, got theirs again, including numerous family members, friends and acquaintances that I know of.

Applied for mine in October, no mention that they had stopped making them, said there might be a delay but they wrote 4-6 weeks on my form...

When I drove into my own garage wall 5 years ago I was told my licence expired and they won't cover me unless I can produce a valid licence, I had to rush to get a temp that same day. Luckily I submitted my claim in the same morning and they picked it up. So I wouldn't even want to risk repudiation.

Edit: I know it's 5 years as it expires again in two or three months.

Usually they just ask you to get a temp license "else, you're getting a ticket next time".
