Driving a foreign registered car in SA

Hi guys,

Need some advice, I am from Botswana and I'm going to be studying in the eastern cape(Rhodes University) I want to drive down with my golf 5, will it be safe? I know golfs get stolen/hijacked often. So I'm unsure if this is a good idea, any safety tips would be much appreciated. Also what car if not a golf would be safe to drive?

In Grahamstown? Anything with four wheel drive so you can navigate your way out of the pot holes. Makhanda has some of the worst roads I've encountered.

Something like this would be ideal
