Good evening

I know cars imported from Lesotho and Botswana are not allowed in SA, if you are a South African citizen. I would like to know what happens if, I have a family in Lesotho I ask one of my family member to buy the car for me register in his name. Would I be allowed as SA citizen to drive the car, God forbid but accidents do happen. What will happen if I'm involved in an accident?. I know no insurance will cover me. The disc I will have to go Lesotho every year. The car will be in my cousin's name but I will be the regular drive.

I have family in Lesotho and Botswana cars there are cheap, my cousin just bought a nice VW Polo 1.2 very cheap R60k.

You will have a problem insuring it here in SA. You'll have to insure it in Lesotho with SA as a territorial included area however their third party cover would not apply and you'll have to get TP insurance at the boarder and if they will insure it for a year is another question I cannot answer.

Insurance I'm not that worried I'm worried what if I'm involved in an accident. If I would not have a problem driving around Lesotho car with SA license.

Insurance it's other story maybe my cousin can register me as a regular driver. I'm just wondering if it's really worth it.

About 10 years ago I had a showroom selling cheapies, and my one salesman was from Lesotho.

I used to drive his Lesotho vehicle every now and then and even when cops pulled me over, I had no issues, me being an S.A citizen etc.

Thank you Semisane for asking this, and also thank to The Traveller. I was thinking of buying Japan import car from Swaziland and have a good friend of mine to register it under his name.

I am aware that you can not register it here in South Africa, but I am not sure whether I am allowed to drive it here in SA. And if I am allowed, what to expect, either from SA, borderor Swaziland.

Thanx

It's super easy... U r allowed to buy a car from Botswana and use it in s.a. make sure it's in your name from Botswana... They LL only want a passport and a Botswana address which is never a problem. U can use that car with Botswana plates as long as U wish....

If U intend to change to s.a registration....then ull have to keep it in your name with Botswana...for 2 years...then go pay SARS 10% of the book value or the value at which U bought it.... ( I haven't yet done this step...my year two is 2020 may) . People who have less knowledge speak all crap. What is illegal is to buy a car from harbour or those in Durban in transit.... and attempt to register it with s a straight away... That car must go to Botswana, pay Botswana tax and register it... Then bring it to s.a for private use...

Message directed to Matheson. Did you manage to register the car in South Africa. How was the process. And what paperwork did you need. Please let me know. I want to purchase a car and want the correct information and how long must you really wait to change over to South Africa number plate. Thanks Youvesh

Hi everyone.

I have a related question. How safe am I driving a foreign registered car in south africa, I own a golf 5 and I want to drive in the eastern cape while I do my degree. Will it be better to leave it in Botswana and how would I keep it from getting stolen. Thank you

Unethical life tip: get fake license plates.
