Before the next uneducated naive and uselss sys-admin goes off about DRM (digital rights management) on this forum plz oh god plz find out what DRM is all about - because it appears there is a huge misconception about what exactly DRM is.

thanks

why dont you tell us what you think it is all about, in your personal opinion..then i can point and giggle.
:-)

/sorry, just dont know what this thread can possibly achieve...i take it you are letting off steam

i'll join you...

my damn boss is such a total [email protected] spent most of yesterday installing a brand new sub-notebook, got it in as an early sample so i personalyl didnt even know the manufacturers name/chipset///nada...i spent soem time in device manager, looked up the pci id's i could see and got the necessary drivers. then all the windows updates, then our preinstalled software...ready to take a virgin ghost image of it for deployment.

little did i know he took the machine home lastnight, spent most of his time online+facebook, installed a bunch of useless crap including the INCORRECT hotkey drivers, adn by the time i received the machine this morning back from him it was bluescreening when opening control panel and the keyboard no longer worked. did he take a ghost image in the state i gave it to him? dont be ridiculous.

so, to reiterate:
he gives me a non-booting machine, of unknown origin, i turn it into a sleek winxp sp3 digitally signed driver powerhouse.
i pass it back to him.
12 hours later i get a doorstop returned to me.
how cool is that?

he is iranian, so i showed him those photoshopped pics..u know what he said/ he reckons IRAN sent a normal pic, and "the west" photoshopped the pics, knowing they will be found out and turning IRAN into the laughing stock.

oneday, i will take his turban and tie it to his nepotistic brother's car bumper. may allah protect you as you slide through the london congestion charge zone. on your backside.

there, dont we all fell better now?

I'll tell you what DRM is...its the technology that allows your Blu-Ray player to tell you that it doesn't like the TV you are using so you can't watch the HD content you paid for. Its the technology that allows you your DVD drive to tell you that you are watching a DVD from a region it doesn't recognise. Its the technology that tells you that you cannot listen to a song you paid for on your MP3 player because it is not supported by this particular form of DRM.

It is the technology they claim is there to stop "piracy". I have yet to see a single piece of DRM technology that stops "piracy".

What DRM is really there for is to suck as much money out of an unsuspecting public as possible. Why allow people to record digital broadcasts from their TV sets (like they've been doing all these years with their VCRs) when you can have them buy your show on DVD?

In future the DRM situation could worsen with all sorts of media being offered online and many media now refusing to work unless they can be authenticated online. What happens when a company goes belly up? Does the game, music, movie, ebook you bought die along with it?

okay...I'm done ranting.

the software I got with my notebook refused to play some rented DVD's. I found out that by ripping the DVD and removing the encryption, I could play the DVD's.

I feel like DRM encourages me to pirate content. why go through that effort if I can just download a perfect copy of the net?
