So I got a beta invite for dropbox.:D

Basically it puts a folder in My documents that is sync'd to the dropbox cloud in the background. So the files can be opened/edited etc like normal files. The (public) files can also be distributed via public links (Like this).

Revision control is also built in. The interface where its controlled is kinda facebook like (6mins ago you renamed 123.txt to 312.txt etc). Space is limited to 2gb.

And I think it can also link with Apple's cloud thingamajig (from which a lot of features are borrowed afaik).

Somehow friend's dropboxes can also be linked & shared but I haven't figured that out yet.

The only downside I can see is that it doesn't work over local-only adsl...otherwise it would have been perfect.:o

ETA: 2gb is for beta testers. It looks like it will be 1gb in future....but betatesters keep their 2gb.

Linux version is out too.

Went and registered for the beta only to be told I'd already done so - checked my gmail and lo and behold there's my invite :o

One has to wonder how secure your data is on their servers. I mean what is the payoff for them?

Sounds cool. I got a free account somehow at filedropper which isn't as integrated (at all) but I've got 250GB of space, which is quite useful for sending big things to people. It's got a very clean simple UI, not at all like Rapidshare and it's fast as well. I'm not sure if it's still possible to get free accounts there though...

Heh imagine you do a 250GB upload!!! ;):eek:

Tried to signup and no invite yet :( I guess I will have to wait and see if anything shows up.

The communication is ssl'd and the data is stored with AES256. But I'm sure they can pull rank & decrypt it if they need to.

No idea. I haven't seen any ads or anything...maybe those will show up latter.

James, I'm a bit short on invites cause I want to hook up some friends w/ invites...but if its anything like the gmail beta then the invites will be all over the internet within days.

I've got a few invites available.
