My ADSL connection drops for no reason. Sometime it will stay up for hours and then just drop, only to connect a few seconds later. Sometimes it drops and connects or even fail to connect for a few minutes. Any ideas as to what this might be?

My network layout can be seen by going to http://www.helderberg.biz/network_layout.gif

Any help will be appreciated.

I've had a similar problem...

Mine is related to the physical Telkom wires. Telkom are currently trying to rectify, but if the wind starts to blow...my connection drops. Sometimes reconnects immediately, sometimes takes a few minutes, and if the wind is blowing hard for a long time it takes hours to re-connect.

Needless to say, if a telkom techie comes to my house, it behaves perfectly :(

arf9999, that sounds like [thread=16592]the attack of the wind-powered vegetation monsters[/thread]

lol ic :D

arf, try to locate the route your line takes from your house to the nearest pole and if your feeling brave and can access that pole, get onto a ladder and have a look.

I know exactly where the pole and box is for my line and where it connects to on the streets surrounding - always useful info to have. You need a large ladder however, the boxes are a good 10 to 12 feet up on the pole.

That's all I'll say - it's obviously not legal to go fiddling around with Telkom stuff, but it sounds to me like a simple case of a loose connection in the box your line connects to.

It's not exactly rocket science at that level of the connectivity - of course, once you start going from pole to pole across the neighbourhood it gets more hectic :D

Your within your legal rights to examine the pole and the outside of the box, but of course, your not allowed to open the box and fiddle inside of it. You could however, just by looking, be able to determine whether the wiring looks dodgy and can inform Telkom.

It seems obvious to me that it's a very localised issue, however, it could be a loose connection 5 poles away into your neighbourhood.

I've checked my pole, and so have the Telkom guys and it seems fine....and my neighbours have BIG dogs (and probably guns) so I'm not going to wander through the neighbourhood with my ladder;)

I'm now on first name terms with a techie and have his cell number, so I'll just keep bugging him 'til it's fixed. I'm waiting for a wind storm so I can get him here when it drops.

I hear ya !

Get as much technical info out of that tech guy as you can - I found out where my line hooks into by quizzing a few of the Telkom guys when they were busy f'ing up my ADSL line by upgrading - it was not even close to where I figured it connected.

It's good to know, because if your driving toward home and see a few Telkom vans parked, you'll know if there are working on the lines that hook up to your house and if you get a disconnect, you can go down there and have a word with them.

So the wind is now blowing in Jo'burg and my connection keeps dropping...again.

But according to Telkom, the fault is at the exchange and a DSLAM card needs to be replaced, and they don't have stock. I have a feeling that they are going to get the stock, replace the card, and my connection will be perfect....until the wind blows again. :(

From John Heywood's Proverbs (1562) "It is an yll wynde that blowth no man to good,"

He must have forseen Telkom ;)

Dont close your fault report, even when they phone and tell you they tested the line and its working, for some reason thats seems to be the only way to p them off enough to actually get the issue resolved.
