So a friend dropped my ext hdd.

Looked fine at first, but I'm getting an IO error on a certain file so I guess it did take some damage. Moving files off it right now & will probably get 99% of the stuff.

So how do I find & mark the damaged areas as bad so that I can (sorta) use the drive again? I've got spinrite 6 here but using & interpreting its readout is a mystery to me. Same for the like 6 different modes that spinrite has.

Note: I don't care about the lost data...that not what I'm asking.

I think the rubber drives come out next year! :D

Seriously though... I would not trust a dropped drive with ANY of my data.

^
what he said :p

I would get the stuff off ASAP and not risk using it for anything important at least. Maybe make a back of important stuff and shove it in the cupboard.

Get what you can off it, check and mark bad sectors, log doing so, run stress tests/burnin a few times, check and mark bad sectors, log doing so again, compare to first log, repeat.

Once all done it should be ok to use.

This is what I need. Just with more tech detail please. Mark how? Log with what?

Guys,at least he can use the HDD as a doorstep....
Rubbish. Its still practically new. Say, kelevra wanna buy an ext hdd?

I'll do the opposite. Now that its not trustworthy anymore & hand it out to more friends...worse case scenario is they drop it...again.

I was think more along the lines of a drive with built-in parachute.

Lots of media out there that needs moving...the kind that is replaced easily.

Start>Run>Cmd
At the prompt type chkdsk DriveNumberGoesHere: /F/R/X

Open EventViewer: Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter] and click on
"Application". In the "Source" column, look for the "Winlogon" item.
Double-click it and you should see the results of your Chkdsk

Thanks will have a look after I copied stuff.

Also looks like a bit more damage than I thought. Already 3x bad files (~1.5gb total).

Sounds like the drive may be very dodgy.

Hope its just some sections that are scratched and not head damage.

put the drive inside a fridge for 10 min and connect it and then copy data out and take back to supplier

The drive has been running spinrite over night. Still not done. 166 bad sectors so far that spinrite can't fix. :( fck

I know about the fridge trick, but its not relevant to this thread.

Possibly you can replace the drive and keep the case.
