Dropped my 2.5" external drive

I feel so stupid. While using my drive in the laptop on my bed I got out of bed and accidentally pulled the charger cable and dropped my 2.5" drive on carpet about a fall of 50cm and when it hit the floor it was still plugged in reading and writing to the disk.

Now the drive just makes beep type noises. About 30 in total. Ten a second before it does anything.
I assume the head is buggered and/or the motor is dead

Is there anyway for me to get my data form a company without costing an arm and a leg?

Eish. Sorry, man. Can't you just restore your backup? Or is that also fubar? That's why all my important data has at least six backups. When any data hits a system I decide its status and if important or higher, ensure it's backed up within a minute.

If you don't have any backups then you are screwed. Those data recovery guys charge a fortune. So unless you [-]have[/-] had critical data on the drive best would be to start collecting it again, and before you start setup a backup scheme.

Do not power your drive on any further and there should be a fairly good chance of recovery.

SouthBit pricing, 30 - 50% cheaper than competitors:

40 - 500GB = R3,590
501GB - 1TB = R3,950

I would expect the actual harddrive to be stronger than that, actually be able to hit cement from a few meters.

What is the exact model on that, maybe you can just open it up and remove the adapter, use it as a normal drive.

Nope...if its spinning & takes a hit...thats game over (short of hardcore recovery).

If its not spinning then the hdd head is "landed"...and then it can take serious hits.

I'll take it to Southbit and see if they can fix

Anyone has a contact there that can give discount? (Wishful thinking)

What I don't like about their terms

In the event of an unsuccessful recovery, a charge of R450 will be applicable if the customer wishes the
faulty hard be returned. This charge is to cover a portion of the lab time and man hours used during the
recovery attempt.
This doesn't make sense. R450 only if I want it returned.
I would want a memento if they fail that I can put in my wall to remind me everyday to backup and be careful.

I would guess no one asks for the drive back seeing the broken costs as much as a 500GB new drive.

You pay double at other companies to receive the drive back.

Sarcastic?

Not at all.

You have to pay to get your data back. If you don't like their terms then go somewhere else and pay more.

Data recovery isn't cheap.

I've used Southbit before and I can highly recommend them. We had one instance where they couldn't retrieve data and had to pay to get the drive back. It's their time you're paying for.
