I recently took out a 2GB data contract from MTN after testing a mate's device at my house and was pleasantly surprised at the fast download speeds. I live in the Douglasdale area, JHB.

However after now using my device for the past 2 weeks, i realise that after your device is idle for a few minutes, its drops to EDGE network and then the only way to get it back to 3G/HSDPA is too turn it off and on / reboot.

This is quite annoying and pointless if you are using it as a wireless modem to connect to a few devices in the house.

Anyone else having this problem?
Or better yet, know of any solutions to sort this out.

Which device do you have?

You may be able to configure it to operate in '3G Only' mode, either using the supplied dashboard, or MDMA.

Hey,

Its a Huawei E586. Its a portable wifi device. Tried the MDMA application, but dont think its not compatible with the device.
Is there a chance you can just be getting a stronger signal on startup of device, and then it just decreases strength as it settles in?

Have you got any advice whether a signal booster aerial is actually worthwhile. Have heard MTN are keen to supply these?

Cheers
