I have 2 Telkom cables running from the Telkom pole on the corner of my property to my house. (2 x ADSL)

The cables pass through a massive tree, which was always there, even when the cables were installed.

Naturally the tree has grown and the branches are causing the cables to be pulled very tautly.

Whose responsibility is it to "free" the cables, mine or Telkom?

Well your the one that's going to sit without ADSL if they break and Telkom is not going to stop charging you rental. My advice would be to just cut the branches.

If you want to be proactive DIY. I doubt Telkom will come and sort it out before there is an actual disruption to your service and then you'll have to wait at their convenience to have it fixed.

My longest ladder does not reach the culprit branches...

/will phone a friendly Beast tomorrow

My neighbours cut down their tree and broke my line. Telkom came and fixed it at their expense.

However I did ask them to give me subterranean fibre so this problem wouldn't happen again. They said "No" ;)

/sees many suggestions

Missing the point, though. I'm paying quite a bit to Telkom for a service that includes maintenance on their network, so why should I pay more? Remember that their network starts at the telephone jack in your house.

The aerial line to my house was damaged in a storm and the pole is in a neighbors property with a tree growing around it that caused the damage. During the day the neighbors yard us locked so Telkom could not gain access. They left notes requesting access but neighbor refuses even when I try request.

Net result is Telkom says sorry can not replace line so only did a joint that gets wet in heavy rain. Tried everything but answer comes back that I need to send neighbors a lawyers letter and sort out.

So while you may pay them for the service this does not mean they will solve your problem!

Always wondered what happens if the neighbors line happens to get cut one night :)

Well, I suppose that you could always phone in and ask, see what they say and go from there? Although, I understand that there is a call-out fee if they decide that it's your problem and not theirs.

Although, don't you know someone who works at Telkom who would be better able to advise you? Or perhaps ask them if they could ask someone?

Your neighbours don't really have a choice, there is this thing called servitude which grants Telkom (and others like Eskom etc) access to the property in order to provide a service.

Agreed there is a servitude but if they not prepared to make arrangements for Telkom to get onto the property it seems Telkom makes this your problem :(

UPDATE:

Phoned Telkom yesterday and reported a fault on my POTS line (I have 2 physical cables from the pole to my house). Told them there was a bad crackle on the line. Also explained that the drop wires from the pole run through a tree and that they were stretched very tightly.

Techie came out today and attempted to trim the culprit branches himself. He called in his buddy to assist him. After a while (and much pruning) they decided to cut the existing cables and replace it with 2 brand new ones!

I now have perfect service again!!

great to hear, imo it was there responsibility to begin with, surprised that there was no uphill though.

We have a telkom pole in our yard and on a few occasions techies have asked for access. We refused as they did not give prior notice. Rule of thumb is not just to let a person in your premises without prior notice (security reasons). Strange that our line is not connected to that pole.

I have two Telkom poles on my property. The one is behind my garage and feeds to 3 of my neighbours. The other one (as per OP) feeds my property and 2 other neighbours.

Your security concerns are VERY VALID. Telkom must make an appointment to gain access to your property.
