Anyone found a game similar to the old xcom ufo turn based series. Brilliant game play. Would be nice to see it redone with todays 3d cards.

I know there were xcom sequels, like TFTD and Apocalypse. Know Laser Squad Nemisis was developed by the same guys for online play but its not the same.

Downloaded Apocalypse but it wouldn't run from my XP os. Obviously need some kind of stabilizing program to fool it into thinking its still 1990. Any suggestion.

A few months NAG had the full orignal XCom game with a patch which allowed it to run on XP systems.

UFO:Aftermath and its sequel which i cant recall have similar gameplay as Xcom and are the best games loyal to the XCom level of gameplay... thus far...

Yup have a look at UFO Aftermath. Its quite close to the original. Kalahari.net had it for quite cheap a few months back. From what I read they are also working on a new one.

Aftermath was fun to play as it was so close the original but just didn't have the same feel to it.

If you do get make sure you get the patch as it was very buggy.

Thanks for the heads up on that patch. Will check out UFO Aftermath. Any idea what the new one might be called?

UFO:Aftershock...

Dont know where these guys get the titles from... ER? :D

It seems that more than one group of Xcom fans have got together to work towards a sequel true to the original game.

The spin offs have various names. Xcom Xenocide looked quite impressive but seems to have stalled. Probably internal politics. Others I've come across UFO Sokobane (1st person shootup), X-Com Apocalypse

LSN is OK; done by the original Xcom programmers, a well thought out net game but... still not quite right. But then they never said it was an xcom follow up :)

Wots NAG? :o Really want to play Xcom UFO again without resurrecting a 200MMX and 95 OS. Bought the R30 game on CD few years back but it doesn't like the new millenium.

Bit of a noob right now wrt os patches etc but heck that's why I posted the sticky :D

NAG = New Age Gaming (they changed the title cause people frowned upon New Age... please, some old folks should just be stuck in 'n pit and torched with brandewyn en spirits)

its the largest local gaming magazine and it also is responsible for RAGE, the largest games/computer expo in SA. with a huge LAN as well! i have never been there and never will, since i live in cape town. drat

You're not alone, P.E. (now called the N.M.M. mouthful) isn't much closer :(

Brandewyn and Witblitz would do the trick ;)

Hey just checked out the NAG site & saw a thread on UFO Apocalypse :D sounds awesome. Just like the old game.

Still wanna get hold of the older games & play them. Aftermath does sound so so.

Wonder if the new game will have a network element to it.

Can i download old UFO from NAG or must i subscibe? Or was it a CD attached to MAG thing?

Apocalypse was good. Still have the game here in the box. It had the same kind of feel as the first two, but a bit more updated.

I finished Aftermath as well, but while I enjoyed it, it was not on the same level as the first three games.

Wish they'd just remake xcom ufo 1 with better graphics and updated sound.
Bloody Google Earth got me going with all this ^. Made me think of that old Geoscape Aardbollie from UFO 1.

The balance of base building, research & missions was perfect. The weapons alien and otherwise were also plentiful enuf to keep the game interesting.

Having squadies flipping out and plugging everything in sight including other squadies, and those hypnotic synthesizer tunes in the backround made for great gameplay.

There are lots of classics they shud redo. Games like Total Anihilation 1 so that I can battle until the plains are strewn with bot wreakage. I imagine it will happen.... someday.

Looks like Aftershock is gonna be good. Seems close to UFO 1. Launch is set for the end of September 05. Hope we get it here. Can't see why we wouldn't

If you thought that was amusing you should check out the Thread killer thread... or if you value your sanity, rather don't.
