DSD1110 fault. 8118 error

I also got the dreaded 8118 error code and thanks to this thread i managed to change the capacitors but i only managed to get a 25v 470uf 85-95 degree capable capacitor its working fine but what is the dissadvantage of this standard 85 degree capacitor as compared to the 105degrees capacitor

I am the latest happy camper who replaced the C10 capacitor on the power supply module and got the whole thing working again - big ups to Mazal! It cost me time (about 10 minutes) only as the local electronics shop gave me a cap for nothing. The "warranty" sticker was not an issue because it was out of warranty unyway.

@tawzb: It seems this C10 capacitor is particularly sensitive to power surges. The local electronics guy commented that one should use a 105 degreee cap because of the unusually high temperatures in the power supply section.

@MoreaniCarla: Once you have your unit fixed, for future prevention, running the decoder through a cheap UPS should spare the unit from surges if you live in an area with particularly poor power supply.

Guys, I have a dual view set up. My first decoder broke last year (mid) with the 8118 error code. Just a few days ago the other one started giving problems. Where can I have both capacitors replaced?? I'm in Cape Town. Thanks in advance. A quick reply will be much appreciated!!

Had my decoder swapped last year at R342. Failed again, replaced C10 and C8 (both bulging) and now works fine.

What is annoying is that C1 had a green sticker on it and was different make (450volt) to the other electrolytics, so this was what was repaired prior to me getting it. This looks like it is the single largest failure mode for the 1110, but they only change the one failed component?? Surely the ethical thing to do is replace all the caps that fail according to their stats (C1,C8,C10,XXX). R342 every year (for a R10 repair)is too good business to do the right thing.

Spread the news to everyone of A)the fix and B) the ripoff.

Regards

C10 replaced - works like a charm!

Didn't cost me anything as I found a 470uF 25V (original is 470uF 16V) and took me 10mins :)

We'll see which one die's next - but at these "costs of repair" - it's not bad :D

Hi guys where can I buy this capacitor around Gauteng, I am in Benoni?

Replaced the capacitor and wala all is well decoder working. Goodbye 8118-dl.

THANKS AGAIN MYBB!!!

So a very kind FU to DSTV, someone should post this in the DSTV forum

Guys will a 35V work??

Hi people.

My dsd1110 has lost connection to the lnb. I replaced the lnb and cleaned connections but there's still no signal detected. What else can I try. I've replaced c10 just incase but it hasn't changed anything. What I do know is that it boots the same with or without the smart card. Any help will be appreciated.

Error 8118

My son's Multichoice 1110(+2) decoder developed the dreaded 8118 error. Following on from the theme on http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=195, and in the past having replaced several blown capacitors on a motherboard successfully, and having repaired several PC power supplies with the same problems, I opened up the decoder and sure enough, capacitor C10 was slightly bulged on top. I removed the power supply (it's easy to do), and replace the old 470 uF 16v job with a 63v one from Yebo Electronics. Part number ELT477, price R5.01 plus VAT.

The device is now working 100%.

Thanx guys, replaced the C10 CAP and mine working fine too, cost me nothing as I had stock !!!

After the load shedding a few weeks back my trusty DSD1110 gave the 8118 error. Today in lunchtime I popped into Yebo and got a replacement capacitor (470uF 35v) for only R1.60 . Got home removed the decoder to open it and realized I needed a Torx(?) screwdriver grrr, luckily my neighbour had a kit. After opening the decoder I noticed that cap C10 was not swollen and looked pretty much in the same condition as the caps around it. I replaced it anyways and my little DSD1110 came back to life!

Thanks guys!

Fault 8118

Came home this eve and found error 8118. Thanks to mazal in 35 min we were up and running.

Yes, thank you, thank you, thank you :-)!!!! C10 capacitor did the job. I had an old decoder with 2 x 470 microfarad caps and replacing the cap in my decoder sorted out the 8118 error. My wife thinks I'm a genius but it's thanks to you folks on this forum!! R350 saved!!!

Hi guys
I have the same 8118 error and would like to try changing the capacitor. Any idea where i can buy it from in Jhb?
