For ages I have been hunting down a decent display for photo type work. The stuff one reads about on overseas forums and review type sites often does not make it here or if it does its at prices that make your eyes water.

Not that good displays are cheap by any means. They come at a price, but should last a long time so if seen as a cost over time it's not too bad.

All of this preamble is let the photo types here in SA know about me finding a good display at a reasonable price. Please don't expect the price to compare to gaming/office type displays -- this is only for the guys wanting good colour accuracy, normally photo or print pros and enthusiasts or someone wanting a flipping nice display to work on.

Dell make a couple good good displays. I read a couple reviews on the U2711 and I wanted one. I sourced it locally from the guys who do dell hardware and to say I am happy would be a very serious understatement.

My 2c worth:)

What colorimeter do you use? I've got an old Spyder2Express but I'm thinking it might be time for an upgrade.

None for now. Never had a screen that warranted the cost.

Lots of conflicting advice online about which solution is best.

Outdoorphoto rented out a solution a while ago, maybe that is a good option.

See here bottom of the page.

That's quite a good price. Do you think that would be decent enough for home use? Maybe it's time for me to invest in a monitor calibrator.
No idea. One would think that being Pantone they might know what they're talking about though. :)

I probably won't be upgrading my Spyder2 anytime soon though.

The display does come factory calibrated. Dell's blurb "Factory-tuned Adobe RGB and sRGB modes minimize the need for further color calibration; each monitor arrives with a certified color-calibration factory report". Each monitor comes with a unique setup, specific to that particular display. I am not sure how much better I will get it to than what they have done at the factory.

Unless they calibrated it in the exact same lighting conditions that you're going to be working under that certificate seems more like a marketing ploy than anything else.
