Short version:
Any thoughts? Is the gateway broken? Or, despite assurances to the contrary, has Telkom just not activated our DSL yet?
- We ordered a telephone line in May.
- It was finally installed yesterday morning (2+epsilon months after order).
- After the phone line install yesterday morning, I went to the local Telkom shop and did an application for ADSL self-install (just the line --- we bought our own gateway (a Linksys WAG200G) and will be using other ISPs for data).
- This afternoon I got a call from Telkom telling me to "go ahead with the ADSL self-install".
- This evening, I started following the setup instructions for the WAG200G. It gets to "checking Gateway status" and then says "The DSL cable is unplugged".
- The DSL cable is not, in fact, unplugged. We've tried more than one phone cable and that does not resolve the problem.
- The Ethernet on the WAG200G is working fine. I can see the WAG200G through the admin webpage at 192.168.1.1.
- When I call Telkom's ADSL helpline and put in my "ten digit Telkom phone number", it tells me that I have "not entered a valid number".
