DSL cable is unplugged

Short version:

  • We ordered a telephone line in May.
  • It was finally installed yesterday morning (2+epsilon months after order).
  • After the phone line install yesterday morning, I went to the local Telkom shop and did an application for ADSL self-install (just the line --- we bought our own gateway (a Linksys WAG200G) and will be using other ISPs for data).
  • This afternoon I got a call from Telkom telling me to "go ahead with the ADSL self-install".
  • This evening, I started following the setup instructions for the WAG200G. It gets to "checking Gateway status" and then says "The DSL cable is unplugged".
  • The DSL cable is not, in fact, unplugged. We've tried more than one phone cable and that does not resolve the problem.
  • The Ethernet on the WAG200G is working fine. I can see the WAG200G through the admin webpage at 192.168.1.1.
  • When I call Telkom's ADSL helpline and put in my "ten digit Telkom phone number", it tells me that I have "not entered a valid number".

Any thoughts? Is the gateway broken? Or, despite assurances to the contrary, has Telkom just not activated our DSL yet?

Telkom have not activated your DSL. Just remember there are strings attached to self install:

You have 7 days to complete, else they charge for the install
If you phone their helpline more than once, they charge for the install

and

If you eat KFC faceing South, they charge you for the install

Gotta love them.

Personally I would log a fault report online as I've found them to be more responsive. Good luck,

I just tried to verify the line (using our GPRS connection). Both the telephone number and the order number produce the same error message:

Please ensure that your directory number and order number are valid!

Whoops --- I thought it said Telephone Number or Order Number, not both.

Anyway, when I put in both at the same time :D it says:

Your ADSL Service request resulted in UNKNOWN_DN_ON.
One of the Operational Support Systems threw exception : The directory number specified does not match the order number.
Please consult the helpdesk at 0800 375 375 for further information.

so is the line now active?
they say it takes 20-30min after verifying the line.
tHE CRETINS at telkom dont mention anything about the line activation/verification
when you do a DSL self-install. I had a similar experience recently, and only discovered
the verification process after a lengthy call to their adsl support desk

does any one have a version of the "infamous" telkom music, maybe someone should put together a remix, i personally think it would be quite popular and probably be a hit amoungst those that use music to get "amped" :D

So this morning I went into Telkom and told the dudette behind the counter about the error message I got last night from the Telkom Verify ADSL site. She went into her system and said:

  1. <#include blush.h> "Ooops, I left a digit out of the order number I gave you", and,
  2. "According to the system, your ADSL line is not yet ready for self-install --- maybe try again early next week"

Which all sounds reasonable, but a few minutes ago I tried the Verify page again --- using the correct order number this time --- and it thought for a while and then said:

Your request for ADSL failed. Please consult the helpdesk at 0800 375 375 for further information.

So does that mean that Telkom can't give me an ADSL line? Or does it just mean that my line is still not ready?
