DSL Line Speed Update

I still can't understand why we only get up speeds of 384!
I know we can do so much more, why can't they give us 1MB or something.

Are you referring to general web browsing? Because I have noticed this too with the 4Mbps line - not much of an improvement in browsing speed over the 384kbps I was on until today! The only time I hit full speed (actually, 440kB/sec constant) is doing local speed tests (e.g. Telkom, iBurst, etc.) - and this on both IS Uncapped Express 512k (yes, yes, I know this is supposed to be capped at 512k, but for local it does not seem to be) and SAIX Unshaped (Prepaid)... Frankly, I am a little bit disappointed. On the upside, using a download accelerator or opening up lots of web pages in tabs and letting them load seems to utilise the available bandwidth nicely.

I just applied for my DSL 4 meg line, The lovely sweet operator at Telkom has assured me by next week it should be activated but I think by later on today it shall be activated wait by tomorrow forgot today is still Monday.. I phoned at around 4:50 pm so I'm sure there technical department could not do any testing at all. I hope the 4 meg makes my life easy simple and more efficient,,,

ADSL 384Kb

noise margin upstream: 21.0 db
output power downstream: -2.0 dbm
attenuation upstream: 4.0 db

noise margin downstream: 23.0 db
output power upstream: -1.0 dbm
attenuation downstream: 7.5 db

Very strong figures there, BTTB! Particularly on the upstream... ;)

Oh good!
I wasn't sure what was good or bad.:)
Our property is across the road from The Telkom Exchange.

My Upstream might be strong and all, but ADSL is asymmetrical, only 128Kb up.:(
If you take Wimax, your up and down speeds are symmetrical.

Are you sure? I think MWEB does, but not Telkom. I could be wrong.

I have a friend who is on trial with MWeb and has a Symmetrical 1Mb Connection. The speeds fluctuate during downloading where upload speeds often peak above the download speed.
I am not sure what Telkom offer?

That MWEB product sounds amazing. 1Mbps upload. I would love that.

Billion B7300M Router

Noise Margin Upstream: 12.0 db
Attenuation Upstream: 4.0 db

Noise Margin Downstream: 36.0 db
Attenuation Downstream: 7.0 db

Very impressive stats, Lunchbox!

Interesting to see that in general, upstream noise margins are a LOT lower overall - even for those that have exceptional downstream noise margins (and low attenuation).

Does Lunchbox's router round off the ratios? Seems a bit strange they all .0 :S

Some old numbers from earlier in the year. Will see later today whether they have changed

Code:
US Margin 14
DS Margin 17

DS Line Attenuation 23
US Line Attenuation 13

EDIT: New Stats

Code:
US Margin 17
DS Margin 15

DS Line Attenuation 20
US Line Attenuation 10
