Okay its a given that BusinessDSL is 512 or 1024. Residential comes in 192, 384, 512 and 1024.

Now after setting up a couple of these lines it seems that a couple of strange things are going on.

The "connection" between the router and the DSLAM on a 192 circuit is 320up/192down, so these lines max out at about 275 kbps, so i would imagine the difference is the overhead, like atm ect.

but if you upgrade to a 384, the connection speed is 640/256. however this is the same speed as the business dsl connections to.

so what if any is the difference in the product of 384 and 512 acctually.

Also the 1024 line connects at 11xx so does the overhead stay as a percentage of the connection or is it fixed.

look i understand that there are distance from the exchange issues and it also depends if you are on a busy exchange, but are these "connection" figures between the router and the DSLam anything to go by or is it limited afterwards by saix?

just wondering?

my 384 runs at around 512 speeds. downloads reach 52kB during the night.

I have a 192 installed, but I think I sometimes manage to get downloads at 512. When I normally download something, I get between 30KB/s and 50KB/s, but I've had several downloads as high as 60KB/s sustained.

I have a 384k installed and it registers 512k. My 1024k line registers 1154. I usually get 52kb/sec on the 384k and 108kb/sec on the 1024k. When I had my 512k installed 4 years ago, now 1024k, my router had a speed of 5984k. Since then, Telkom restricted the bandwidth. But its nice to know what I am capable off.

Rev, are you using a bandwith monitor to measure your throughput or something like the download bar on Internet explorer. If you are using IE and the file your are downloading is say less than 1meg, IE starts to download the file before you select the destination to download to. It works on an average download starting from the time you have selected where to save the file, so your PC may have downloaded 200-300k before it displays the download bar. After 1 sec your download will be at 300k for example.

I'm aware of IE's pre-download feature. The download rate is from the GetRight 5.2d trial version. In my experience, GR usually gives you an accurate estimate of speed.

PS. I'm a Firefox-guy (I think it also starts to pre-download, but haven't paid too much attention to it).

Well since last week my 512 has started to perform a little bit better, most downloads now come in at bout 67KB/s, while it was usually bout 55KB/s
