DSL Self Install and Router Phone, help.

First off sorry for stupid questions but I've never had Telkom DSL.

We're changing over to the Telkom DSL line from our wireless. Our phoneline used to be pre-paid and has been chaged over to a normal phoneline and now we'd like to get the DSL installed.

I was wondering if someone would tell me what the Telkom "self install" entails?

The ISP we're thinking of handles the DSL line rental aswell but something I'm uncertain about is how the DSL and the phoneline will both still work. My router (D-Link DSL-2640U) only has an input for the DSL line and no "out" for a phoneline so how will the phone still work? Do I need some equipment from Telkom or something?

How would I get the DSL and phoneline working with this router?

You need to split the line before the modem. With one side going to the modem and the second to your phone/fax. You need to install a line filter on the phone/fax side.

Hope that helps. Use any splitter bought form supermarket or hardware store.

well if U have one phone line outlet then U need a splitter and a micro filter(get from telkom i think) ... however if U have to phone line outlets then U jst need the micro filter i think. Basically line goes into Ur phone n one line goes into Ur router.. the filter n splitters will sort the rest out.

Thanks that clears up getting both to work by the sound of it, plug phoneline into the splitter then both the router and phone into the splitter, nothing special it seems. Much appreciated.

Now I just need to know what the "self install" entails, and what problems or equipment I might need. Anyone pleeeeease.

Well you would apply for SIO and then you would wait for Telkom to call you.
You would then go ahead with setting up your router etc, once your router synchs with the line you would verify your line speed at www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl , type in your telephone and Telkom order number, after 30min you should break your current connection but rebooting the router and then entering your isp details into the router and saving that...you should be ready to go after that.
