Hello!

I wonder if somebody could clear this up!

1.) Is the DSL self install option available wherever DSL is available?

2.) Do you still have to pay the R404 rand if you already have 2 Pots filters and a dsl router all you need is them to change the line?

This may seem stupid, but I think an internal memo should circulate the telkom call centers, containing these answers.

many thanks.

1) Yes it should be available wherever they offer DSL
2)No you don't pay a cent for installation, apparantley the R404 covers the cost of the technician to come out to your premises.

As for their stupidity, well its obvious man, telkom pays their employess so ****ty, which you can see from their profits, that they don't attract the brightest call center "agents" hey.

1) No, I myself am doing a self install with telkom and I have been repeatedly told no it is not supported by all exchanges yet. They will first do a ADSL compliance test then they will check too see if a self install is possible, if so they will contact you and give you the details or let you know that it is not possible. At least that is the way it works with me.
2) One call representative told me I still pay the full installation amount, though I am not so sure that is the case. Since my install has still not been finalised 25 days later I do not know if they will bill me.

As for changing the line, no they do not change your line but do connect you to some ADSL port in the exchange and enable it as far as I know. They do not come to your house. I am told the actual work required takes them less than 15 minutes.

I've just compleated self install. Was told by the customer centre that not all areas are available for self install. the last 2 digits of your order number denote the area. I know 44 is available for self install

From what they told me there is no installation charge ( R404) for the self install option, BUT, I await my next Telkom bill with trepidation!

Excuse my stupidity - but what exactly is ' Self Install ' ? What does it involve ? How does one go about it ?

... and justifiably so, too. Get your rant kit ready...

Phone 10219 and ask them. Essentially, you buy your own kit and install it on the telephone line, which is checked by Telkrap for 'compliance' (i.e. capable of DSL-grade carriage). You should have them check it before buying any kit...

Basically you apply for ADSL, and when you apply you ask for the self install option. As far as I know it's not available in all areas yet.

The application then goes to planning and networks as usual. Once the port has been assigned at the exchange you go to a customer service centre and pick up instructions on how to proceed with the self install, and buy the required filters or splitters to complete the installation. If you don't have a modem / gateway you can pick one up from them as well.

It's pretty easy: You place a filter between the wall jack and your handset. Plug the adsl modem directly into the wall, do a basic config on the modem, verify your connection on the verifyadsl web site, and your away.

In reality however you need to call the adsl helpdesk fairly regularly. Networks told me that the exchange work was complete and I could go ahead, but no port had been assigned or connected. It took a further 5 days of calling to complete. Still installation time was much shorter.
