Dsl speed spikes during the day

got this (1meg+ISP Shaped) with telkom and having this problem of slow speed spikes (fluctuate) and unable to use like dloads, youtube videos etc. at night speed does't gives spikes or fluctuates. that means the line seems to be fine and all the connectors etc. so the question is what is the problem. phoned telkom many times but they unable to rectify anything.

Hi There,
It is likely that you are being shaped by the ISP. Is it better at the beginning of the month? You could have hit your cap in which case international sites will be very slow and local sites should still be fine which may also explain it especially if you are in a residential area.
It may also be that your exchange is congested during the day. Are you in a predominantly business area?
It may help to look at your routings to google during daytime and at night. You can do this with a tracert commend in a dos or cmd window. (tracert www.google.co.za)
If the second address is taking a long time then it is a congested exchange.

thanks tim. i just wanted to know what is causing this.
Shaped: yes it is shaped acc.
No: this behavior continues everyday of the month. after hitting the cap i tried pingtest 5:50AM. it shows B grade line quality. during the day the page hardly load.
my line stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1024 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.5 db 21.5 db
Noise Margin 33.0 db 13 db
Area: yes Residential + Business. also tracert to google.co.za showing no sign of second address taking long.thats at 6:05AM.
will try today during the day.

so is this congestion, shaped or got some other problem? tracert to www.google.co.za Hop 1.2.3.4 loading ok but some delays in other hops till 10.

any one know what is the throttle time of telkom start? as far i know is 6am to 6pm. (also is telkom still throttle any of their account?).asking this because utorrent is running right know and spikes started to happened at 8:00am thats the peak time. speed is not constant as it was at night.

Telkom doesn't throttle accounts based on the time of day anymore, that stopped in Feb, I think. But you will be shaped during business hours, although many on Ti will tell you that very little shaping occurs, in fact you can pretty much get line speed on torrents during business hours.
When I was on 2MB I would get 200kbps across all download protocols.

Thottling will occur when you have been deemed to be abusing the service

Theres no clear cut figure as to how much data you need to pull before getting throttled but its in the region of:

1MB +-120GB
2MB +-250GB
4MB +-450GB

Still not sure on 10Mb yet, waiting for Yuu to get back to us in the Ti thread

one thing is sure today is sunday and no shaping from telkom so speed still spikes and not constant as it was in the early morning. so this is congestion i believe. and there is no hope any fix from telkom in near future (

is 7AM and the speed spikes like hell. telkom shaping starts 7AM. so as i tracking down the culprit SHAPING+CONGESTION=SPEED FLUCTUATION (spikes).
